Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • The environment at King's College is famous for the crowd, networking, and influence. This and the reputation of the university were the main factors that influenced my decision. Furthermore, the research aspect of the university, especially the course structure design, seemed very holistic and was covering a lot of skill sets.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The main reason for the rejection was stated as a delay in my application, which was filled quite late after the applications were opened. Other than that, the reason could potentially be a comparatively lower experience in my CV as compared to others.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Your experience and projects should be explained such that the definitions are not very technical but not very basic either.
  • Show your real motivation. Do good research about the university, the professors, and what the course is providing (this shows your interest in being recruited) and put your interests with respect to that in your SOP (even if you are low on grades or your background, sometimes writing a great SOP and showing your motivation can get you in).

Admission Experience

  • I chose to study in the UK primarily because of the research orientations and one-year master's courses. This will help me achieve more in less time so that I can pursue my PhD/job aspects as soon as possible. Moreover, the culture in the UK is very sophisticated.
  • In terms of academic reputation, KCL is a top university with a very highly sought name and reputation, which helps score good jobs as companies recruit people from institutes they trust. It is often said that the weather in the UK is bad but in my experience, just a small part of the winter can be harsh, but that is covered by Christmas celebrations and a vibrant lifestyle; also, everything is centrally heated, and you can hardly feel the cold inside.
  • In terms of career opportunities, if you apply soon enough, that is, from the beginning of your course, you need to be focused and perseverant for grabbing opportunities. If you have job experience already, it can be really helpful.
  • Lastly, the student life in King's is the best in all of the UK; it is very multicultural and has opportunities and clubs for every kind of activity—robotics, art, fashion, language, country-orientated, etc. You can never get bored and it has a lot of opportunities to find your preferred connections.

Class Schedule

8

  • 2-3 hours of classes are there per subject per week, and 2-hour tutorials/labs for the same in engineering. The timings are flexible in the 9-6 window of a day.
  • The average strength of the class is 40 students. There are 5 Indians in my course, including me. For master's programmes, the time that should be given to assignments or subjects is 4 hours per subject per week.

Faculty

9

  • One faculty per class is available but there are good technical assistants under each faculty to help you. The best faculties are Oswaldo Simone for machine learning because of his amazing teaching skills and flow of teaching machine learning (even if you don't have any background, he is amazing).
  • Matthew Howard for intelligence and autonomy (also the course director of robotics; he is very interactive and gives you a lot of time to contemplate and relate practical things with theory).
  • Naseem Ramli for embedded systems because of her teaching skills.
  • Faculties may help you land jobs but you need to be very interactive and present with them for that so that they are acquainted with you.

Campus Life

9

  • There are 5 campuses of KCL. We have a sports centre (gym, climbing, etc.), an NHS centre inside campus, and the very famous Maughan Library is a campus in itself.
  • I studied at the Strand campus. I am not very aware of the fests, but there are hundreds of clubs in KCL, we also have webinars and competitions in every subject field.
  • Extracurricular activities under clubs can be done as members or otherwise, as members you get discounted prices and can go to competitions and exhibitions, meet people in the industry etc.

Part Time Jobs

  • Students prefer working in souvenir shops as they are not too much physical hassle, cafes, etc. Average pay is 10-15 GBP per hour.
  • It is not very difficult to get such part-time jobs, you can search on google (storename + jobs), or can apply in universities by talking to student representatives or on the university sites.
  • The roles of TAs and RAs are varied; you need to do a PhD for that and usually work under a professor; incomes are not very good in the beginning at least as compared to opportunities in corporate.
  • On campus, you can have student ambassador jobs; you can work in the canteens. 20 hours max part-time work is allowed per week for students in the UK.

Placement

8

  • Many of my batchmates have started applying; they have tentative jobs for now but want to score for more. I can say 30-40% might be employed by 6 months.
  • The average salary range is 40k per annum. Students can find jobs on Kings career connect site, graduate employability schemes shared by the career department of Kings, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. The lowest salary can be 25-30k per annum and highest can go up to 100k.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • Accommodations can be found on the internet directly; try to find alumni on LinkedIn, etc., and talk to them about potential sites or groups where you can find accommodations. You can use these sites: University Living, GradPad, and Amber Student.
  • Challenges are that cheap accommodations get booked way before college starts; be early with the process (about 3-4 months before starting). Best Recommendation near Strand Campus: Northumberland House.
