What Students Say
Likes
- Diversity in the cohort- The class was a combination of people from different places from all around the globe.
- Support from staff- Staff was always there to guide and support wherever required.
- Part-time work opportunities- There were plenty of on-campus and work from very flexible home opportunities.
Dislikes
- My campus (Denmark Hill)- This campus is for the Institute of Psychiatry and Psychology and is far from the main campus, which makes it a little less happening compared to other campuses.
- Lack of practical exposure to real-life industry- My course lacked practical aspects and applicability of theoretical knowledge in the real world.
Course Curriculum
- The course was not very difficult and was also suitable for someone who has not studied organizational psychology before. It was much theoretical and lacked real world applicability of the concepts in the industry.
- It was a unique combination of psychology and psychiatry. Classes are held three days a week for two hours each, for a total of four hours across the three days.
Admission Experience
- I applied to the following colleges:
King's College London - I was admitted and accepted the offer as it provided a unique course in the entire UK and is ranked second in the world for Psychology.
Leeds University - I was admitted but did not accept the offer as King's College London was a better choice for me.
Nottingham University - I was rejected, possibly because my experience and interest may not have aligned with the university's requirements.
London School of Economics - I was rejected. - I chose King's College London over the others as it provided a unique course that had a combination of both psychology and psychiatry. Secondly, the overall world ranking of King's College London is number 2 in Psychology. Thirdly, its location being located centrally in London was one of the reasons to choose.
- The admission process involved filling a paid non-refundable form with all the documents like a transcript, IELTS or TOEFL result, Statement of Purpose etc. The eligibility criteria differ for every course but mainly a good grades in undergraduate degree, minimum of 6.5 in IELTS score and relevant work experience can be an added advantage. SOP holds importance and should be well written. Overall admission experience was smooth.
- I applied to the September 2023 intake as it is the biggest intake in the UK, where all russell group universities take place. I started applying in January and received the outcome of the application in April. So, I would highly recommend applying as early as possible to avoid issues in the visa process. After getting my outcome, I was asked to pay 2000 pounds, a non-refundable amount, to accept the offer.
Faculty
- The number of students in my class was 57. There were approximately 20 Indian students. For each lecture, there is a single teacher but each module has two teachers which take lectures interchangeably depending on the topic and there are guest lecturers as well.
- The teaching methodology was a mix of presentations for in-person lectures and pre-recorded lectures of one module.
- No, there is no direct assistance of the faculty members in finding jobs but yes they can guide you if you ask them for help.
Campus Life
- King's College London has four campuses, namely, Strand Campus (located in Aldwych), Denmark Hill Campus (located in Camberwell Green), Guy's campus (located near london bridge station) and Waterloo Campus (next to london's south bank center).
- Facilities like libraries are present on each campus related to respective departments, cafeterias, common spaces.
Part Time Jobs
- There are several part-time opportunities available both on campus and off campus. Opportunities like student ambassador, library assistant, Teaching Assistant, research assistant, subject ambassador, campus tour guide etc. are available on campus. The hourly wage is 14.22, and a student can work 20 hours per week during term time.
- There are other opportunities, like working in stores, restaurants, bars, dog walker, nanny etc off campus. It's easy but you need to be active to fill forms on time and then clear the interviews. Students typically earn between 12 to 14 pounds per hour. Steps involve searching jobs online, visiting websites, maybe directly approaching the employers in person, filling out applications, sending resumes, giving interviews and then getting the job.
- The recommendation would be to apply as early as possible to not miss on opportunities and also keep a track always.
- Average Package: GBP 30,000 per annum.
Placement
- I do not know how many people secured the jobs within six months of completing the course. The average salary range would be 30,000 pounds per annum at starting.
- Students generally find jobs through online portals and job search sites through networking. Placement experiences so far have been average, as people are still trying to secure jobs.
- Applying to graduate schemes can be beneficial and would be recommended.
Accommodation
- My accommodation was at King's College London. So, I got to know about it from the college's website. My room was a large ensuite and the rent for which was 1360 pounds per month including all the facilities like electricity and wifi. The kitchen was shared between six people.
- I will recommend students to apply as early as possible and check the location before selecting any accommodation. To get into cheap accommodations do consider how far it is from your campus as transportation is costly and may also take time.
- My accommodation was 30 minutes away from the campus but it was the nearest accommodation of King's College so it was most convenient for me.
Exams
- The exams which are required for admission in King's College London are either IELTS or TOEFL. The university requires 2 Letters of recommendation from either previous employer or academic recommendations from previous professors.
- A Statement of Purpose is also required to be written, showing your interest in the course and university, why you chose the course, your future goals, and if any relevant experiences and internships. There was no interview conducted in my course.
Fees
- The course fee was approximately 35,000 pounds for a year.
- The accommodation fee was 340 pounds per week. The fee was charged quarterly. The majority of the expenses were groceries, transportation and rent.
- Transport expenses are approximately 70 to 100 pounds per month. Cooking meals at home can save on a lot of money and can be pocket friendly then having meals outside so that is highly recommended.
Scholarship
- No, I got delayed in filling out the form for scholarships. So, anybody willing to fill a form for a scholarship should do it as early as possible in November or December.
- Always keep an eye on when the forms come, as there are multiple Indian scholarships as well besides the scholarships provided by the university. I am unaware of the number of students who get the scholarships each year.
