Indian nationals were the biggest group granted UK sponsored study visas in the year ending December 2025, with 95,231 visas issued to main applicants (about 23% of the total), according to the UK Home Office’s latest immigration system statistics published on 26 February 2026.

The figures matter for Indian students planning UK intakes in 2026 because they signal India’s continued dominance in UK student arrivals even after policy tightening on dependants, while the Graduate route (post-study work pathway) remains a major driver of in-country extensions.

Key numbers in the latest release

The Home Office’s “Why do people come to the UK? Study” chapter for YE December 2025 reports:

  • 426,471 total sponsored study visa grants (main applicants + dependants)
  • 406,824 study visa grants to main applicants (+4% vs YE December 2024)
  • 19,647 study visa grants to dependants (-10% vs YE December 2024)

Top nationalities for UK study visas (main applicants):

  • India: 95,231 (23%)
  • China: 89,019 (22%)
  • Pakistan: 30,781 (8%)

The Home Office notes dependant grants have been lower since January 2024, following rule changes restricting most students’ ability to bring dependants for courses starting on/after 1 January 2024.

In the same YE December 2025 release, the Home Office reports that extensions onto the Graduate route fell by 6% to 221,335.

Impact on Indian students

  • India remains the UK’s biggest study-visa source, which can mean tougher competition for admissions, housing and part-time jobs in peak cities.
  • With dependant pathways still restricted for most taught courses, applicants planning to travel with family need to verify whether their programme qualifies under exceptions (commonly postgraduate research routes).
  • Graduate route demand remains high overall, but the 2025 dip in extensions is a reminder to plan post-study timelines carefully.

What’s next for 2026 applicants?

  • Plan earlier for CAS + visa filing, especially for September 2026 intakes.
  • Confirm dependant eligibility before committing deposits if family travel is essential.
  • Track future Home Office releases in the Immigration system statistics quarterly series (latest update: 26 Feb 2026).
