Education Revolution: Rishi Sunak Government's 7 Plans to Transform UK Studies for Indians

Studying abroad is one of the most crucial decisions in an Indian student’s life, as abroad studies are expensive and highly competitive. Choosing a wrong program can lead a student in high debt and very low income. To combat these issues The Department for Education (DfE) in UK has decided to discontinue the degrees that have low employability prospects and high dropout rates in all the UK universities. In a release DfE said that these kinds of programs leave the students with a lot of debt and very less income to cover their expenses.

On 14 July, 2023 the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and education secretary announced that the Office for Students (OfS) will be asked to limit the number of students universities can recruit for such courses. Even though some low yielding programs will be discontinued, certain changes and upskilling programs will be announced to increase the skilled workforce leading to employability and in result contributing to the economy of the country.

Study in UK: Changes made for Indian Students

Based on the announcement by the prime minister and education secretary, the following are the changes the Office for Students, United Kingdom, will be instructed to make. These changes will help in the betterment of the education of international students planning to study in UK:

Fee Reduction

There will be a reduction in the maximum tuition fee that a UK university can charge for classroom-based foundation year courses. It will be reduced from 9,250 GBP (9.93 Lakh INR) at present to 5,760 GBP (6.18 Lakh INR).

Drop Foundation Courses

In UK it is required to do a year of foundation courses, if you are studying medicine or veterinary sciences, but it has been found that a year of foundation courses is not necessary for subjects like business. Therefore, foundation courses will be discontinued for business.

New T-level Vocational Courses

There will be new T Level courses available. The British national curriculum school-leaving qualifications or three A Levels (advanced level) are equivalent to the T Levels. A T Level will exclusively highlight professional skills. Students who have these skills may be able to find employment, higher education, or apprenticeships. Every one of these T Levels includes a complete 45-day industry placement.

Higher Technical Qualifications

Higher technical qualifications or HTQs will be emphasised. The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education in the UK has approved new Level 4 and Level 5 certificates known as HTQs. Following are the different types of HTQs:

  • Higher national diplomas
  • Higher national certificates
  • Foundation degrees
  • Higher education diplomas

A network of 21 Institutes of Technology (IoTs) will be established thanks to the efforts of both the T-Level and HTQ initiatives. Collaborations with corporations, universities, and providers of further education (FE) make up the IoTs. The employers will be in charge of deciding on a program's curriculum and making choices.

Apprenticeships along with Traditional Degrees

In addition to regular degrees, students will be able to apply for apprenticeships through the expansion of Universities and College Admission Service, or UCAS. According to the UK government, this will help young students planning to study in the universities in UK.

Skills training

To bridge the skill gaps, UK government will now help students and employers with a number of training options.

New Digital Platform

During autumn this year, the education department will be launching a digital platform to help common people, students and employers access information regarding apprenticeships, T Levels, skill boot camps and courses through a single platform. 100 apprenticeships in sectors like construction and healthcare will be updated on the platform.

With the UK government supporting in-demand courses which will result in better job prospects and introducing skill oriented programs, international students will have an idea of the programs they should apply for and have a better understanding of their job prospects.
