What Students Say
Likes
- Being one of the oldest engineering colleges in india, HBTU has a strong brand value, especially in core branches like chemical, paint, food, oil and civil engineering
- Most faculty members are highly qualified. they are approachable and supportive, especially in research projects.
- the university hosts several technical (technozion, oorja) and cultural fests that provide opportunities to showcase talents and interact socially
Dislikes
- hostel infrastructure is somewhat old; mess food is average and could be improved
- Campus Wi-Fi is not very strong in hostel areas. digital facilities need upgrading
- though core branches have good industry tie-ups, other branches (like IT/CS) need more global -level exposure
Course Curriculum Overview
For core branches, the curriculum is one of the most industry-aligned in india, paint technology, for example, is unique to HBTU and had direct recruitment from top companies like Asian paints, Berger,Kansai Nerolac. for CS/IT, the fundamentals are strong but curriculum needs more modern electives to complete with top tier instituites.
Fees and Financial Aid
the total 1 year fees in paint technology is 1,27,500/-Rs with included tuition fees, admission fees and registration fees. there is no extra compulsory charges. there is no relaxation in fees in categories. HBTU offer merit-cum-means schlorships based on academic performance.
Campus Life
My overall experience at HBTU has been balanced mix of academics, extracurriculars, and social interactions. the campus is vibrant yet academically focused, giving both exposure and discipline. the college hosts its annual cultural fest "Ojasvat" usually in march-april and technical fest "Technozion/Ignite" where student showcase innovation and technical projects. these fests bring in huge participation, not just our campus but also other universities. the central library is well-stocked with thousands of books, journals, access to digital databases. its a quiet hub for study. the classrooms are spacious and well- ventilated, and many have been upgraded with smart boards, projectors, and Wi-Fi. HBTU has facilities for cricket, football, basketball, badminton, athletics, and indoor games. there are student-run clubs like coding club, robotics group, dramatics society, photography club, and NCC/NSS units.
Admission
I applied to several colleges through JEE Main counselling but i couldn't make it into NITs or IIIts even i cleared JEE Main. my rank was not high enough to secure a seat in CSE at NITs. I chose HBTU Kanpur because of its legacy, government status, strong alumini network, and the unique paint technology branch ( which very few college in india offer). To eligibility students must have passed class 12 with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects. admission is through JEE Main scores, followed by counseling via UPSEE/UPCET counselling portal.
Faculty
Roughly 1:20-25, depending on the branch. in my branch the ration is even better, making it easier to get personal attention. professors are highly approachable, especially for academic doubts, research projects, and gate/NET preparation. i like Dr. S.N. upadhyay because of their reasearch contributions and teaching clarity. the curriculum is well structured with a balance of theory, lab work and industry exposure. there are 2 mid-semester exams and 1 end semester exam conducted. Exams are moderately tough. a well prepared student can score easily, but rote learning won't work in core subjects. very few students fail, mostly those who are irregular or weak in labs
Night Life
Nighlife at HBTU is relatively quiet and safe, with hostel in-time around 9:30-10 PM. the GYM, cafeterias, and library close by evening, so most late-night activities happen in hostels where students hang out , play games, or prepare for events. popular hangout outside include Z Square Mall, Rave 3, Moti Jheel, and cafes near kakadeo & swaroop nagar, which are safe for students in groups. while the campus itself doesn't offer a vibrant nightlife, these outings and hostel interactions create a balanced social life.
