What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is beautiful, and sports facilities are really good
- The professors are great at their subjects, most of them are chill and very approachable
- Labs and research facilities are also great, enough for any undergraduate to do whatever he wants
Dislikes
- 75% Attendance criteria is enforced, you can get by with slightly lesser attendance but that is a hassle
- College itself has all the facilities but as it's far from main city, the cost of transport adds up each time you want to go there
Course Curriculum Overview
Course work is great for those interested in research, but real-world applications depend on the course. I will say it's lesser compared to engineering colleges; more emphasis can be given on increasing the practical usage of coursework.
Internships Opportunities
For 1st year, there are no official internship opportunities, but one can get them by cold mailing or directly talking with the profs. For the 2nd year onward, there are official summer and winter internships available, which one can apply for by going to the official website of Iiser Bhopal. I don't have much idea about projects and their outcomes as I'm still in my first year, but a lot of interesting stuff happens here, as far as I know.
Placement Experience
As it's a research institution, more emphasis is given to academia and research instead of placements. We have an active placement cell, but still, it's lackluster compared to engineering colleges. The average package hovers around 10 lpa, and only a handful of people get placements. Most opt for Phd or an MBA.
Fees and Financial Aid
IISER Bhopal's fee structure for the BS-MS/BS/MS programs is as follows: One-time Fees (First Semester Only) Admission Fee: Rs 4,000 Alumni Eco System: 1,250 Convocation cum Degree Fee Rs 2,500 Hostel Allotment Fee: Rs1,250 Campus Development Fee Rs1,000 Caution Money (Refundable)Rs 5,000 Total one-time fees Rs 15,000 Semester Fees (Paid Every Semester) Tuition Fee: Rs 36,700 User Charges/Fees Rs 9,700 Hostel and Dining Facilities (for hostellers)Rs 6,700 Total semester fees: 66,100 Mess fees per month: Rs 3,550 Yearly Fees Total yearly fees (two semesters): Rs 1,32,200 Personal expenses are around 6,000 rupees per month. For SC/STs, tuition fees are nil. Scholarships INSPIRE Scholarship: The Department of Science and Technology provides a limited number of INSPIRE scholarships of 5,000 per month to candidates who got less than 10,000 rank in jee advanced or top 1 Percent marks in their 12th boards. Droppers aren't allowed for this. We can apply for third-party scholarships too, like Medhavi Chatra Yojna of Madhya Pradesh.
Campus Life
Campus life is laid back and chill, we have different clubs which are organising interesting events every other week which provide much needed break from the monotonous daily schedule. Also sports facilities are great, 3 badminton courts, 3 table tennis tables, squash, volleyball, khokho, football and cricket ground are present. Vending machines are installed in each hostel and we have some food outlets as well.
Hostel Facilities
The newer hostel skylarks (hostel 8) and hostel 9 (which is still under construction) have double-seater rooms and are great. Older hostels have single seater rooms which are somewhat annoying but the infrastructure is still good enough. Mess food is good, but it gets monotonous soon, so they update it every sem. Breakfast is quite good. Hostels and mess are affordable, and the college is fully residential; you will have to pay hostel fees even if you decide to stay off campus. Also, it's situated on the outskirts, so people stay on the campus anyways as there is no room or pgs available nearby.
Admission
I applied to other misers but chose this one as it has better campus life are almost similar across all of them, admissions happen through IISER APTITUDE TEST, where we can get these colleges based on our ranks.
Faculty
The student ratio in the first year is approx 1:450 But after taking your majors in 3rd year, it's around 1:50 I liked Rahul Garg, Kenny Thomas, and angna chaudhary as they are very kind to students and are great educators as well. Till now, I haven't disliked any of the faculty. We have 2 quizzes (each worth around 10%) 1 mid-semester (30%) 1 endsem (50%) Quizzes are mostly easy, midterms are moderate, and end sems are somewhat on the tougher side. Most students pass the course and it's relevant and gives a good idea about the subject and later we can do further study in library too.
Night Life
The nightlife is not that great, food outlets close and most people stay inside their hostels, but you can roam around freely with your friends without worrying about anything. There is a curfew for 1st sem students, and they have to get back to the hostel before 10 pm. After 1st sem, there is no curfew.
