What Students Say
Likes
- Since it was a distance mode education, it was very helpful and easy for someone like me who was also working.
- The subject matter was detailed and descriptive. The scope for learning was quite wide considering it was all online.
- There were even practical subjects, so despite being at home, practical learning was also made conducive with the assignments shared and we got to get a hands on experience of things like they are in mass media.
Dislikes
- Supervision was limited. Access to mentors and teachers for doubts was pretty difficult.
- Classes were not regular. Communication was not proper sometimes.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was descriptive and helpful. The study material was provided from the college only and the books had good subject matter. It was practical with examples of real world as well. It was easy to read and understand as well. Exams were held once in an year and they were not too difficult barring a few papers that would ask twisted questions.
Placement Experience
Since it is distance mode, placement aren't offered, but after taking this course, my employability has increased in fields like communication, mass media, printed media, content and others.i also plan to apply to better positions and better companies with a masters degree in my hands now.
Fees and Financial Aid
I pursued masters in Journalism and Mass Communication and it was a 2-year course. The application form was for 1500. The fees for both the year was Rs. 12,000 each. The fee has been same for quite some time now. Apart from this, the university also charges examination fee of Rs. 200 for each course we appeared for . There were total 8 subjects each year including practical's. The exam fee was 1600 for each year. Adding all this, the total fee for 2 years was 27,200.
Campus Life
This was an online setup. But I did visit the campus during assignments submissions and exams. It was pretty nice to meet people and the faculty and discuss with them about your course, we would also meet people from other courses so discussions were more varied and it was good to learn about other people and their choices as well.
Admission
I wanted to work but I also wanted to pursue my masters. I didn't want to leave studies. Considering this, distance education seemed like a great option. I was toying between DU SOL and IGNOU. Upon comparing, not only was IGNOU cheaper but the admission process was also simpler. We had to apply online by filling an application form and that it. The registration, admissions, exam and other processes at IGNOU were more streamlined. I wanted to study mass media and by choosing IGNOU, I did that but also I also kept working side by side.
Faculty
The course that I was pursuing was online. Teachers were there and classes were scheduled, there was supervision but it was not seamless. The faculty to student ration was about 180:2 since ig was distance mode. We had contact details of few of our professors, but communication was not easy all the time. There were times when they would respond and sometimes they would not. My course had 8 subjects in both the years including 2 practical's. There were exams yearly along with one assignment in each subject. Marking was pretty fine.
Interview Experience
There was no such things. We only had to fill an admission form. The application form asks for you personal information, our education background, our family, address and other things. It asks you to choose the course of your choice. Apart from that, since IGNOU facilitates distance learning, it has centres all around the county, so we would be asked to choose our preferred city and our preferred centre within our city whwrw we can appear during assignment submission and exams.
Night Life
There was no campus, we would only visits the college or our centres during the exam time. And the environment during exam time is to see. There is constant tension and people are discussing among themselves. Even after the paper, there is constant commotion. It's pretty tensed but also lively
