- Seniors are very friendly and are always willing to guide you incase you need any help
Dislikes
- VIT has a huge intake every year. So it feels very crowded a lot of the time
- The hostel management is a little strict with boys but very strict with girls
Course Curriculum Overview
I'm still in my second semester so it's hard to comment about the real world applications right now. I can suggest areas for improvement in the curriculum. One being reducing the reliance of powerpoint presentations and being more in the class. Another one would be to put out timely assessments rather than handing out one large assessment
Internships Opportunities
I'm still in my first year, so I don't have an idea about the companies and the stipends offered to students at VIT. Incase you don't get an internship, VIT gives you a project known as capstone project to do which will be considered as you're internship credits.
Placement Experience
The placements of VIT are pretty decent, keeping in mind the huge intake it has. Major companies from all fields come to VIT to recruit engineers. The current placement round is still going on, but from rumours the highest package has gone for around 1 crore. Students can apply for a job from the 8th semester. The 7th semester is gone into a compulsory internship. I have a particular interest in research, so my plans after getting my degree would be to attempt to pursue a master's degree abroad or give GATE.
Fees and Financial Aid
My tuition fees are around 3 lakhs every year and hostel fees are around 1.5 lakhs. VIT charges 6k for re-registration of courses incase you've failed that course before. VIT provides financial aid to anyone from EWS categor. My batchmates fees ranges from 20 lakhs to 30 lakhs for the overall 4 years.
Campus Life
VIT has 2 annual festivals. The first one is GRAVITAS, which is VIT's annual tech festival. Various clubs organise workshops and hackathons over a period of three to four days. This takes place in the month of september. VIT also has a lesser known week long tech festival known as YANTRA, where clubs and chapters conduct hackathons and workshops overnight. The second one is Riviera, the annual cultural festival of VIT. Major artists from over the country are invited to perform. Clubs organise fun events for the students to register in and enjoy. VIT has a central library called periyar central library. It has a wide range of books, ranging from exam prep guides to non fictional novels. Students can borrow books for a maximum of 2 weeks. If returned late, then a fine has to be paid when returning the book. Each classroom in VIT has a table for the professor, a projector, and a white board used for writing and projecting. The basketball scene is very active in VIT. Apart from basketball, there are many sporting events such as marathons, mini tournaments, etc. conducted for the students to participate in. There are a variety of student-run social clubs at VIT. they conduct regular meetings to discuss various topics.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facility is pretty good. The rooms alloted to first years are pretty spacious. Afterwards, there is a counselling process for allotment of hostel rooms based on the CGPA of the students. Meal quality depends on the mess chosen. Each hostel block has its own mess. Students can choose a mess in a different block at the end of each month. There are three types of messes- veg, non-veg and special. There is a set menu for all messes which is displayed in an app. Hostel affordability depends on the type of room allotted. Prices range from 1,00,000 to 2,50,000 rupees for 2 semesters.
Admission
I couldn't clear my JEE Advanced and had VIT as one of my backup options. I also had Manipal institute of technology as one of my backup options, but chose VIT over MIT as it has a much better industry connect and active alumni community over MIT. The infrastructure is also very well maintained. The labs are incredibly modern and well equipped, along with enthusiastic lab incharges who encourage everyone to pursue research. Talking about the eligibility, there is only one way to get admission into VIT and that is through VITEEE. Based on you're performance, a rank is assigned to you which then used during the counselling process. During the counselling process, you have to select you're preferences of branches and the campus. If you're rank is desirable enough, the letter of admission is updated in the website. Keep in mind if you don't score above 60% in you're 12th(PCM), then admission will be denied later.
Faculty
Before every semester starts, students are to fill a wishlist for the courses they want to take in the upcoming semester. VIT assigns faculty based off how many have filled the wishlist. If students don't fill the wishlist, then there will be a shortage of faculty. I won't be disclosing any names, but majority of the faculty I've interacted with so far are very skilled in their fields of research. There's only been one faculty I've had a bad experiencr with so far. He was very strict with how he maintained the class demeanor and always cut marks in exams for no reason. For exams, there are 3 main exams every semester. CAT 1, CAT 2 and FAT. CAT.1 is a normal test of one hour thirty minutes, while CAT 2 is an open book test of the same duration. The number of students failing to clear the exams depends on the class average and standard deviations taken to calculate grades.
Night Life
There isn't much of a nightlife at VIT, as most of us are not allowed outside the hostels after 10pm. Before 10pm though, there are a lot of options for students to hangout at. If students want to study late at night without any sort of distractions, they can head to the library in the night and study there till 12AM. Silent hours in the hostel starts at 9pm and ends at 5am. Famous hangout spots within the college are foodies, library, SJT ground. I don't have an idea about the hangout places outside the college.
Other Applied Colleges
Manipal Academy of Higher Education - [MAHE] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Electronics & Communication Engineering)
Didn't have the same industry connect as VIT
