Course Curriculum Overview

4

I have always been in interest in fashion designing and heard alot that NIFT Gandhinagar has the best faculties for Fashion Design. I literally had zero knowledge on how to make a dress, sew a dress but right now studied fashion design only a semester has taught me alot. Firstly, the curriculum for NIFT has been set by the world's finest design college, FIT NEWYORK and that's why we have no issue in curriculum. Even it keeps changing according to the needs. We always suffers during the end terms and jury, By the time we are done with end term in one week the jury dates gets released in which we need to complete the jury work(which is not related to mid term, end term) which ends up as sleep deprived, hectic. The design college students really gets any sleep it's like 6-7 hours for 3 days but simultaneously it's fun doing the work of the field we opt for.

Internships Opportunities

1

Since a second year does not a lot of experience, we do not get alot of intership opportunity. The students need to find the opportunities by themselves according to their interest. Some of the students get the opportunity to work backstage in Lakme fashion week, ahemdabad fashion week as of I know.

Placement Experience

3

The students of sem 8 has to prepare for their Graduation project/design collection so for the whole semester they work under a company or designer and if they like the student they might retain them after graduation. Since I am second year only, I do not know the college placements in depth. But I have heard from some seniors that the placements are not good and they prefer to be placed by themselves. But Nift tries to get every student placed they do not leave the student until and unless it's the worst case. Hightest package is 6 lakhs per annum and lowest depends upon the portfolio. My plans after getting the degree is to work under a well renowned couture designer and learn some work skills and ethics, basically to get the experience of how to run a label as I am thinking to start mine one day. But also would like to have master degree as well.

Fees and Financial Aid

For general category Sem 3- tuition fees(1,50,000) Library fees yearly payable(10,000) Mediclaim and student development fees(4900) Exam fees per year(4900) Sem 4- tuition fees(1,50,000) For NRI category(costing of two sem)- Tuition fees(9,07,000) Library fees(52,500) Mediclaim(33,600) Exam fees(4,900) There are two scholarships offered by NIFT to caste categories (OBC, ST, SC) and EWS 1) Sarthak scholarship 2) NSP

Campus Life

4

The annual and technical festival are SPECTRUM held on (Feb/march) every year on different campuses of nift. There is CONVERGE as well it is inter Nift competition on different categories, always hosted by one nift campus and others go there. Held in Dec mainly. We have a good Library, accessible to all kinds of books for fashion management, fashion design, and textile design. The technology within the classroom are basic, we have smart board, tables which are needed for design students, etc. There are student club(sports, environmental, cultural, fashion, literary, music, dance). For sports, the college offers basketball, volleyball, cricket, badminton, and table tennis. We have an Instagram page for all the club sports(falcon club), Fashion(Izraz), music(vritant), and dance(imbue). The cultural club always organises event for festivals in which the students decorate the whole college which is fun.

Admission

I have applied for NIFT,NID, UCEED, UID(private college). I was not serious for taking the entrance exam of NID and UCEED since it does not offer the course I wanted but anyway I gave the test just for the experience but I did not get in. UCEED was difficult for me as it was more mathematics-based. I got into a private college- UID since the fees structure is expensive and considering their curriculum, I was not interested also I got into NIFT as well so I chose NIFT over UID because why not. Admission process for NIFT- it has its own exam process. There are two rounds that students need to clear to get into NIFT 1st round - GAT( general ability test) CAT( creative ability test) GAT has questions related to general knowledge, current affairs, mathematics, and english. Total of 100 questions more weightage is on english and then maths. 2 hours. It has 30% weightage CAT has total of 3-4 question related to design in which students need to complete these tasks in 3 hours. 30% weightage

Faculty

5

The relationship between faculty to students is great, they are understanding, approachable during college hours and after that we can text/email. Some of the faculties take alot of pain to teach us and give us constructive criticism/advice. Some of them wait after college hours to review our work as well. For the exams- we have mid term(30 marks), End term(30 marks) and finally jury(40 marks). In mid term and end term we need to submit our work to the faculties but in Jury we present our work to the jurors(3-4) in which among one will the exterior juror. The exams are pretty easy to clear of a student as been adhere to the brief given by faculties. We have a very strict attendance system, we need to maintain 75% attendance in all the subjects of someone not able to maintain the attendance that are marked under Follow Up and given the jury afterwards. There is a system of carryforward as well where if the student attendance either in the case of attendance or not able to perform well in exams. 2-3% fails to clear the exams.

Night Life

4

The night life is not in campus, the campus closes by 10:00. The inside of campus is Gym, Nescafe cafeteria. There is hostel facility as well but only for 1st year Girls and the hostel gate close by 9:30 pm and the girls not allowed to go out then, if they want to take a night out the parents need to mail the hostel warden for the permission. Right outside of the campus are alot of food trucks and the locality is safe.

Other Applied Colleges

United World Institute Of Design - [UID] | Bachelor of Design [B.Des] {Hons.} (Fashion Design and Styling)

I did not want to study in a private college because we do not really learn anything and private college is expensive as well. Also, I gotten a seat in a reputated government design college so I opt for it

Course Curriculum Overview:

It is a 5 year course with a dedicated foundation year which was a driving factor in chosing this course. The curriculum requires us to actually go in the city and explore different types of manufacturers and makers which taught us a lot about how the real world works. The only improvement i would suggest is having more group activities. There are 2 major submissions in midsem and endsem and they aren't difficult at all if you have completed all your work.

Nid follows a old style curriculum which has its own pros and cons. Here we prefer sticking to the basics in the beginning we believe in building our base rather than rushing. We imply more of practical knowledge rather than theoretical basically we experiment live with our ideas a lot and we are allowed to explore anything that we are interested in
