What Students Say
Likes
- I liked the overall atmosphere of the college. It is located inside a forest-type scenario so even in the scorching heat of Chennai, the college was always cool.
- The faculty in my department seems to be well learned with most of them having a doctorate. No professors usually takes leaves. Most of them come with their syllabus prepared except for some who just read out of a text.
- The campus has very good buildings. Even though it was built long ago, all the rooms are spacious with plenty of windows to let a good amount of sunlight and air in. The drinking water facilities are also good .
Dislikes
- The high cost of rent inside the college is very worrying. We have to pay mess fees every month in addition to the fees we already pay at the beginning of the year. The hostel fees increased by 2000₹ as well when compared to last year.
- The difference in rules for women when compared to men is upsetting. They have different curfew timings and some hostels have better food than other hostels.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is very relevant. They change the curriculum regularly to fit the changing standards. A paper that I cleared this year is not there in the curriculum next year for my juniors. There are 3 internal exams. 2 of them will be written while one of them will be a project or viva. The ratio of marks considered from internal exams and semester exams considered in the marksheet is 50:50. The professors usually complete their portions before the exams starts. We will even get some study leaves for studying. The exams are not usually very difficult. One can refer to the previous year question papers which has a lot of recurring questions. These previous year question papers are provided in the website of the college.
Internships Opportunities
There are a lot of internship opportunities encouraged by our professors. A new startup called the MCC-MRF within the college offers a wide variety of opportunities for students who has creative skills. A pupil, if interested, can submit their project idea and they might be selected and their research will be funded by the MCC-MRF. I have not been able to obtain an internship yet.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee of my department is good. As an aided student, I paid around 26000 in my first year and I paid 8000 as im entering my final year. The fees gets reduced as we move up a year. But the hostel fees are a bit much. It increases by 2000? every 2 years. I have heard of some scholarships but I have not been eligible to get one. Children of parents who are missionaries get scholarships. Sometimes they get free housing as well. Since I have always wanted to go for higher studies, I have not paid attention to any placement drives happening in the college.
Campus Life
The intra- college cultural event is called college auditions. It takes place over the course of 3 days. The inter-college cultural event is called deepwoods. It also usually takes place over 3 days. A pro-show of bands or celebrities will usually take place after the end of these 3 days but due to the management being stricter this year, the banned all pro-shows in the college. Choir and Theatre of the college is very well known for their concerts and plays respectively. All the departments have their own intra-department as well as inter-collegiate events. They are usually conducted in the even semester(January, February or march). The condition of the library is not that great as there are not a lot of good books in it which ate required by the students. The sports meet of the college happens in the even semester after months of training are given to students. There are inter and intra department sports meet as well. NSS, NCC and scrub society is a huge part of the college
Hostel Facilities
The hostel fees is very high. It has increased this year. It is not affordable for a lot of students and some of my friends has moved out after their first year. The meals offered are not bad but they are the same every week without any particular nutritional value. There is veg as well as non-veg options every day. Getting admitted into a hostel is very hard. We have to apply through a link in the college website as soon as we get admission in the college. Sometimes, people get in through recommendations. The room is not particularly huge. One room will accommodate 3 students-one first year, one second year and a final year. The final year student will have a secluded area of her own by a half-wall. A student will get a bed, table, chair, and a cupboard built into the wall. She has to buy her own cot and fan as there are no ceiling fans. One has to pay extra if they own specific electronic devices like laptops, kettles, hair straightener ,etc.
Admission
The admission process was very easy. I had to get admission physically in the month of June and classes started on august. I applied to the college through a link in their website and got an acceptance mail. There was no admission exam. I might have gotten admission because I was a christian as it was a christian management.
Faculty
Most of the faculty in my department are very approachable. There exists a system of mentor-mentee where a student has a specific mentor. Since this system was started in our department this year, the effectiveness of this system is very negligible. Most of my professors have a doctorate. Some of them are working on it right now. There are enough professors for all classes. The language in which they teach is english, which is a huge relief for students from outside the state and dont know the language.
Other Applied Colleges
Sacred Heart College - [SH] | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] (Physics)
I got into SH after I got admission in MCC
