- The exams are application based, but some professors make the exam papers tough
Course Curriculum Overview
My interest in learning about civil engineering, structures, and infrastructures attracts me to choose the course. The curriculum is designed so that one can get knowledge of their respective fields. There are also courses of management, and economics other than the core so that one can understand about these crucial fields too. The courses are well designed and make one prepare for real-world applications also, but the delivery of lectures by some professors can be improved. Also, the lecture questions and practice questions are way too easy than those that are asked in exams which makes exams a bit difficult. Exams are held two times in a semester which are mid-sem and end-Sem and also there are two quizzes. So, in total there are 4 exams -2 quizzes (generally 10% each weightage) and 2 exams (40% each).
Internships Opportunities
Various internship opportunities are being offered on campus during 3rd year, while some of these companies further get converted to job offers. Most of the on-campus internship opportunities offered on campus are with a stipend. Some of the top intern companies that offer roles for IIT BOMBAY students are Bain &Co., Amazon, Google, etc. In the intern 2022-23 a total of 1104 internship offers were made in different sectors like IoT, AI and ML, R&D, consulting, etc.
Placement Experience
The campus placements in the college are amazing. Students from the 7th and 8th semesters become eligible for campus placement however some get PPO(pre-placement offers) from the 6th semester itself. All the renowned companies from all sectors be it coding, finance, consultancy, civil, mechanical, or electrical visit the company to recruit students. For the civil department, the top recruiters are L&T, TATA, RAMBOLL, etc. College Placement 2023 record: Highest: 3.67 crores per annum (internationally) and 1.68 crores per annum (domestically). Average: 21.2 lakhs per annum Median: 19 lakhs per annum.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure is as follows (for 1 semester): Tuition fees: rs1,00,000 Service charges: rs6,950 Hostel fees: rs12,350 Mess fees: rs22,500 Various Scholarship schemes are being offered for students: 1- Institue-Merit -Cum-Means: For different financial categories for students having gross parental income less than 5 lakhs per annum and meritious performance on campus. 2-Remission of tuition fees for all SC/ST reserved categories students. 3- Free messing facilities for SC/ST students with net income under ?5lakhs per annum. 4- Other Govt./Private Scholarship schemes.
Campus Life
Various social, cultural, and technical fests and events are being conducted regularly in the institute. Mood Indigo: Asia's biggest cultural fest is organized in IIT BOMBAY in December. People from different places come to attend this event. Various programs, performances, and competitions are being organized in MOODI. Techfest: The flagship technical fest of IIT BOMBAY was organized also in late December, where participants from different universities came to participate in the Robo wars. There are various clubs like Drama Club, Acting Club, Comedy Cons, Technical clubs, etc., and teams like NSS, and NCC that serve as a way for one to explore his/her passion. The sports facilities too are amazing on the campus.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities provided to us were not so good on campus. The hostels given to freshers are good, but from 2nd year onwards the hostels allotted are older hostels. The older hostels are not in good condition and are not too spacious to accommodate two students. The space is congested within hostels, which is a problem. The mess menu is great with all types of food, but sometimes the quality degrades which should also be improved. The hostels are allotted during admission time only and the process of registration for hostels is also easy and simple.
Admission
Admission into IITs is not too easy, one has to clear the JEE ADVANCE exam with a commendable rank to get into the college. Eligibility: 1- Passed class 12th PCM with 75% or above. 2-cleared JEE ADVANCE exam with above cutoff rank for the course. For Civil Engineering IIT BOMBAY, the cutoff rank this year was 4300 for the general category. However, the data differs for other categories as there are reservations for SC/ST, OBCs, and female categories. The exam level difficulty is much higher, making it one of the world's toughest exams, but with regular study and practice, the exam can be cracked. The exam journey starts with clearing JEE MAINS(which occurs two times a year- Jan and April) and those who clear the MAINS exam get a chance to sit for JEE ADVANCE (once a year).
Faculty
The Civil Engineering department in IIT Bombay has around 50 professors of different specializations like transportation engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, etc. The student-to-faculty ratio in pour department is about 3.0. All the faculties are well qualified and completed their research, P.H.D from premier institutes. All the faculties have immense knowledge of their field and are a great resource of knowledge for someone who want to learn deeper in their field. Most of the professors explain well and make the classes interactive , so that students can get maximum out of the lecture and learn the application of the concepts. Professors are also approachable via mails or by visiting their offices during office hours. Questions an doubts can be asked in classes too, but if someone wants more clarification, can approach them by sending mails or visiting their offices.
