What Students Say
Likes
- The campus. It's so huge and beautiful and I love the fact that the college authorities take utmost care in maintaining the campus as it is from the period of Britishers. The Bai jerabai wadia library is one of the epic libraries of India.
- The faculty is well trained and as of course, the teachers are very dedicated towards teaching their subjects. Proper guidance is given and every student is given equal attention. Teachers provide notes and reference material that are very apt.
- The curriculum is very apt and I can surely say it covers all the important topics that are to be learnt by a psychology student. Mentors are always there to guide and provide assistance ans internships from almost all walks of life.
Dislikes
- There're not many things that I disliked about my college. The fests aren't that great and huge as other colleges have.It is very lowkey and many people opt to sit home than attending any fests. No concert happens and no celebrity is invited to perform
- The faculty for other courses is not that great. For eg. The faculty for sociology, the teachers don't teach properly and also aren't able to communicate properly with the students.
Course Curriculum Overview
While taking admissions, I was very intrigued when I saw the curriculum and the topics covered under it. The curriculum makes sure that students learn psychology on three parameters that is technically with the ethics, theoretically that is practically and socially. The teachers give their 100% in teaching all these subjects properly. The curriculum covers all the important topics that help in future education and entrances too. So far I've realised that for future entrances my curriculum covers almost 40-50% of its syllabus. The teaching methods coexist with the syllabus aptly. The teachers make sure that the students don't only learn bookish knowledge but also get proper practical knowledge too. No topic is left for the students to learn on their own, hence the syllabus is completed at least 10 days before the exams start so that students get enough time to grasp the ending concepts properly. The exams are good they actually test your knowledge and your frequency of attending lectures
Internships Opportunities
Students have to do a compulsory internship in the last year of their college, so I'm not much aware about it as of now. I'll provide more insight when and after I've experienced. From the seniors I've heard that the internships don't give any stipend but the certificates given are very useful in the long run.
Placement Experience
Placement rate is not that good, as for my course, you need to complete your masters in order for you to get a job somewhere. So it's the college's fault here it's the course which has different requirements. After graduating, in order for you to become a Psychologist you've to complete your masters too. But as of job opportunities after graduation, you can work as an intern or an assistant in some firm or hospital. My plans after graduation are to pursue masters and then get a licence so I could become a Psychologist, then I'll wither work in a firm or hospital or start my own clinic.
Fees and Financial Aid
Fergusson college has two sections known as grant in aid and self finance/ non grant in aid. The students admitted under grant section are those who have scored higher percentage and non grant are those who haven't scored comparatively high to grant students. So the fee structure is also different. Students under grant section have to pay less fees as scholarship is given these students and students in finance section have to pay more including the fees to access the department and it's assets. The fee differs every year, mostly it doesn't increase, it only decreases. I'm a grant student, so under my everything is included, including tuition fees, miscellaneous etc. the college doesn't charge you more later.
Campus Life
The name of the college feet is Spandan, both cultural and technical fest is conducted under spandan. It mostly happens in the month of December or January. The library is well equipped and consists of almost all the books and reference materials. The classroom has e learning equipments and the classroom is well furnished with proper benches and enough leg space. Also the classrooms are huge. Under sports- football, basketball, cricket, badminton, etc are played and have proper grounds for each sport. Many clubs are run by the students in the college, including the musical club, English club, etc.
Admission
So for the course of BA Psychology, the admission is done on the basis of the 12th percentage. Reservations are also available. Seperate for Maharashtra and non Maharashtrian students and caste based reservations too. The cutoff for psychology is very high. It almost goes upto 95-98% for general category. For UG, you don't have to give any entrances. The admission process is not very tough, it's just that you've to be physically present there. One pro tip- always fill the application form for both grant and non grant. There are two different application forms for the both. The application form is available on the official website of the college and it is made accessible right after the results of 12th Maharashtra board are declared.
Faculty
The faculty for my course that is Psychology is very good. All the teachers and professors are very well educated and have proper degrees for teaching. Mostly everyone has a PhD and those who don't are currently pursuing PhD. They've assigned different teachers for different subjects of psychology. The HOD is well renowned and also teaches very nicely using daily life examples. The teachers try to give their 100% to the students so they learn precisely about their subjects. The teachers are always available for interactions with the students, be it during the lecture, after the lecture, after the college, in the department. The teachers make sure to solve all the doubts of the students. All the teachers are very dedicated towards the subject and the outcome is their teaching method which helps the children a lot. Assignments are given accordingly so that students learn something new on their own.
