What Students Say
Likes
- The Campus is huge. BHU's campus is like a mini city on it's own. You'll easily find transportation, grocery stores, it had a hospital as well, students get medical cards.
- There's an abundance of options when it comes to extracurriculars. There's some kinda competition, seminar, club events going on throughout the year.
- The Alma Mater is exceptional. You'll get to connect with great professors, doctors, lawyers, researchers.
Dislikes
- BHU's system and staffs are very conservative, you'll rarely find exceptions.
- The classes are pretty average and not so regular at times. Good professors are there but I personally found it pretty average in general.
- There's not much to do outside of the campus so the college life is not so vibrant as the recreational options are not so great when compared to big cities.
Course Curriculum Overview
As a social sciences student, I personally feel that the curriculum is like standard outdated government college curriculum type. It has barely changed over years. And practical knowledge is not much emphasized on. They expect us to skribble pages and pages for assignments and practicals. Even in examinations the length of our answers matter more over the quality and information it provides. The course needs to be updated and the teaching style needs to change so that they can prepare students for the practical world. Odd semesters are long (3-3.5 months) and then we had exams. This year even semester started after Holi and the end sems will end in the 1st week of June which is pretty early. Difficulty level of exams is pretty moderate. Nothing too difficult.
Fees and Financial Aid
My tution fee is approximately 8000 per annum. The hikes aren't that common and drastic. I haven't paid for hostel as I live outside of the campus. So all I paid is around 8000 which includes everything. Scholarships is provided to students of Uttar Pradesh by the State Government, I am not so aware about other scholarships. The placement cell is not so great or helpful for arts and social science students. They barely are of any use so please rely on yourself for jobs and internships.
Campus Life
Fests- Kashiyatra, Kashi Youth Summit, fests by IIT BHU, Sarjana, Foundation Day celebration, etc BHU has a very rich and huge library which is open 24*7 for the use of it's students. Technology vise BHU is lagging behind. Tech is outdated in general. BHU has numerous sports clubs, playing grounds and inter department and inter College tournaments. BHU provides numerous sports options - cricket, vollyball, football, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, chess, swimming etc. There are multiple official and unofficial groups and clubs for almost every activity you can name.
Admission
The eligibility criteria of bachelor in social sciences is 50% in 12th grade and 10th grade. In order to apply for BHU a student has to give c u e t exam. After the exam the registration portal opens on BHU official website. BHU has 6 faculties - FMC and MMV in the main campus, the cutoff is pretty high, it's around 300/350 for FMC, 250ish for MMV, and around 200 for affiliated colleges - VKM, AMPG, VCW . Even though DAV is an affiliate college the cut off is 300+ like FMC.
Faculty
1. Faculty to student ratio - six to eight faculty members per department. And for bachelor's there are around 150 students in a class. The number can vary depending on popularity of the course. 2. Department heads and most of the permanent professors hold a PHD degree. Assistant professors are those who are pursuing a PhD fellowship. 3. On most days it's easy to approach professors in campus to ask doubts or for other reasons. But some of them don't really like being bothered over call or text unless it's important and personal.
Other Applied Colleges
Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies - [NMIMS Deemed to be University] | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] (Applied Psychology)
I had to choose between bhu and nmims. Bhu is a government college plus even if nmims is great, it's heavy on the pockets and according to me paying 2.5 lacks per year wasn't worth a bachelor's degree. Bhu has been an esteemed college since decades so it
