What Students Say
Likes
- Good research exposure and infrastructure
- Lush green campus and lot of different clubs which help in academics as well as enhancing extra co-curricular activities
- Good placements and diversity in profiles or job roles offered
Dislikes
- Placements can be more oriented towards other branches
- Some faculties are very strict and give less grade to students
Course Curriculum Overview
I got the course because of my rank and also I liked biology somewhat in class 10. The faculty-student ratio is usually 1:40. The faculties usually have a Ph. D degree from IITs, IISc etc. and other famed international universities. The teaching process of some professors is too good and for some professors, I will rate it as average. The semester contains 2 exams - mid sem and end sem. The mid-sem exams start after 50 days from the start of the semester and end sem exams start after 2 months after mid-sem exams.
Internships Opportunities
Internship opportunities are very high for circuital branches and low for other branches. Companies like Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Mathworks, Equinix, Jindal, etc which can be found on the Institute website offer internship opportunities. Roles are software developer, trainee, GET, etc. My branch which is biomedical institutions like NIMHANS, ICMR, BHARAT BIOTECH and other hospitals provides opportunities for doing an internship. Roles include intern, trainee, etc.
Placement Experience
Placements in NITR are mostly branch oriented. If you are in circuital branches then you will really get a high placement if you work hard enough. For other branches, you have to compete with other branches to get a good placement. Students are eligible for placement from the 7th semester. A lot of companies visit like Amazon, Microsoft, wells fargo, Aditya Birla Group, ExxonMobil, Shell and many more with different eligibility criteria. A list of companies can be found on this website https://monday morning .nitrkl.ac.in /live. The offers made this time are around 1000. The highest package is 52 LPA by Amazon Web Services and the profile is software developer. Other profiles offered are AI/ML engineer, GET, Trainee, faculty, business management, consultant, etc. About 80 per cent of students get placements. I will be joining Shell as an associate software engineer after getting the degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure is divided over 8 semesters. The first semester has little high fees than other semesters due to admission fees. In 2019, first semester fees were 124000 and for the rest of the semesters, fees were 99000. The fees have increased over time if we compare previous batches. There are different scholarships available for students. If you have an annual family income below 1 lakh tuition fees will be waved off. In my time tuition fees were 62500. There are other loans from other organizations which you have to pay after you graduate. There aren't any paid jobs with stipends on campus. However, you can earn online using your skills on platforms like Chegg
Campus Life
NITR has three annual fests Innovision (tech fest), Cosmopolitan (cultural fest) and Nitrutsav. Innovision is usually conducted in November, Cosmopolitan in January and Nitrutsav in March or April. There are also hall fests which are different for different hostels. The library, in the name of the late Biju Patnaik, has a vast amount of books and journals. The classrooms are equipped with modern projectors and ACs. The campus also has sports fests like Vriddhi and annual inter-NIT fests. You also have the opportunity to participate in other NITs' sports fests. The campus also has a lot of clubs and societies like tech clubs, literary clubs, drama clubs, etc. These clubs are run under SAC (Student activity centre). The students also run websites like Monday Morning which gives day-to-day updates on campus. The infrastructure on campus is also really good with different buildings for different disciplines.
Hostel Facilities
Most students stay in hostels and NITR has in total 9 hostels (7 for boys and 2 for girls). I stayed in the MV hall of Residence. The rooms can be single, double and triple-occupied. First-year students are usually allowed rooms on sharing basis. If I talk about facilities in the room, it has a bed, table and a chair with light and a fan. It has shelves for luggage and a LAN connection is also provided in the room. The meal is usually average on most days and good on weekends. The menu mostly offers 2 options. Registration or allotment for hostels is done during admission and it's really affordable. I stayed in a hostel so there was no requirement for PG.
Admission
Eligibility usually includes minimum academic qualifications, such as completing 10+2 or equivalent with 75 per cent and with specific subject requirements (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology). For undergraduate admissions, you need to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India. The application form can be found on the NTA website. The application fees for appearing in JEE Mains have changed over time and now stand at Rs 1000. The registration date for JEE Mains usually starts from the month of January for the first session as the exam is now conducted multiple times in an academic year. Selection is based on percentile. Regarding reservation benefits, the cut-off for selection is less for OBC and SC/ST students than for General students. Talking about improvement, students are not able to know their exact scores which can ne change in future.
