Why to join IIT

Almost every day is like a festival with people from all parts of the country and also because of the presence of some foreign students. Thus its a good thing promoting unity/ harmony. It will be better if only vegetarian food is made available in the campus. Smoking should b banned in strict sense. The shops around the campus should be closed either by telling smoothly and if not that does not work..then by using police force. In the name of freedom..some people (who cannot be called students) are behaving wrongly either with indecent dress up or spending time wastefully on internet. Only good songs should b permitted during college fest.

I joined IIT by writing GATE. I got 95.46 percentile. Opted for IIT Chennai as it is said to be a premier institute and I had good opinion about it.

The courses are designed keeping in view of latest developments. The structure is very flexible and students have lot of options. The good thing in IIT is a Electrical student can attend some courses in Civil dept and vice versa thus permitting inter disciplinary research.

Many students from other Eng colleges apply for internship at IIT. www.iitm.ac.in can b looked into during January if some student wishes to do internship during summer. IIT will pay about Rs. 5000 per month. In case of winter internships the students should preferably apply during September 1st half. If no notification is seen in the website..they can directly write to the department office. After my studies at IIT..when I was working in TIVR communications..I used to send invitations to my juniors regarding internships at our company.

Several public sector companies visit the campus apart from a long list of pvt. companies. I was opting mainly for govt. companies. During our time..HAL / BEL/BHEL were among the list. The placements begin generally in the month of December and go on for about 2 months. The packages during our time were from 6lakhs to 9 lakhs in most cases. Now it is from 8lakhs to 15 lakhs. Some universities/ big colleges also visit to recruit faculty...Noted among them is IIIT (RGUKT). For students who study properly & is active in NSS type of activities..there is no problem of getting job.

Shaastra is a mega technical festival attracting students from across the country. The event display the innovative power of student. The participation easily crosses 10000 head count. Earlier it use to happen in October but now it is happening in Jan. During this fest...a student's initiative by name 'IIT for villages' helps/ promotes food stall by an adopted village. The villagers also sell hand made jute bags.

The fees for research based programs are very less in comparison to B tech course. On the overall the student need not have to spend more than Rs. 12000 per semester. In case of hostel..it will be on an average Rs. 5000. However as the MS research scholars get scholarship..all these fee can b paid without asking from home.

WE used to get scholarship & so there was no need to take loan. However some of the students used to take loan from SBI or Canara bank. The process is hassle free for students of IIT.

Hostel is well equipped with library/ guest room. table tennis/ chess / volley ball..what not! main advantage is ..if u get some subject doubt..u have many people to help u out. The mess manager was courteous. We asked for special zone in the mess for pure vegetarian and it was accepted.

The alumni behave responsibly and I have been taking their help in organizing guest lectures in various colleges and thus trying to bridge the gap between institutes & industry

Generally there will be two unit tests and 1 final exam. generally each unit test counts for 25% while deciding final grade. Some times the tests are open book type..where the student can bring his notes / text books to the exam hall and attempt the questions by seeing those books! Many a times slightly more time will be granted and no hard restriction of 3 hrs. The idea is to encourage students to attempt the problems (not much theory!!). The questions generally demand creativity rather than simply mugging up/ memory.

After getting 95.46 percentile in GATE..I applied for MS in the dept of EE. The gate results come in March and the notification for admission follows immediately in leading newspapers. There was another written test and then interview to get admission into MS course.

Superb. They are dedicated and are very friendly with students. They lead 'simple life' and don't crave for luxuries. Many faculty invite students to their houses for eating. They really care about the students well being. Prof. BS murty of metallurgy dept has given space in his house for conducting yoga prog. for 2 days every month. Many other prof.s also in some way or the other do additional service than regular teaching in class
