Remarks

Overall I liked the college. But there is no lab facility for some semesters in civil and mechanical branches. They have to go university campus for doing lab which 65 kms away. College will arrange bus service. Less infrastructure is available. But overall good academics, good atmosphere, highly qualified teachers these all factors make this college good one

Campus Life

2

Looking back to the eventful history of the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK), Pulincunnu would invoke a mixed feeling in the mind of a CUCEK lover. The only one of its kind in the locality around, it has the capacity to grow beyond a mere Engineering College or a University Department. Offering four engineering under-graduate courses, it has been initiated under the aegis of the CUSAT on 21st October 1999 as a University own department outside its main campus, in the picturesque piece of land in Pulincunnu, Alappuzha district. Being formally inaugurated on 25th of October 1999 in the presence of Syndicate members including Dr. K C Joseph, the then MLA of Kuttanad and the visionary behind it and Sri. James K. J., the Special Officer of CUCEK, the College began its academic activities in rented buildings which belonged to the St. Mary’s ITC, Pulincunnu and the St.Joseph’s HSS, Pulincunnu. There were 192 students in four B.Tech branches, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering in the first batch (1999-2003). The faculty members were deputed from the Centre for Undergraduate Studies in Engineering (now, the School of Engineering), CUSAT and recruited on contract basis. The experience and guidance from many of the senior faculty members benefitted the student and junior faculty community of the College. The College flourished into an institution offering six undergraduate (B.Tech) programs in Engineering (Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering) and a post graduate program, Master of Computer Applications (MCA), within four years of its inception. An educational institution of this kind offering many technical and professional courses and admitting students from all parts of the country and initiated in a place remote from the main transportation system and townships had to face many hardships, in the recent past. But, if it is viewed from a global perspective, it could be noticed that the best educational institutions were groomed up in rural areas which are away from distractions and pollution which are part of urbanization. Kuttanad has been a place which is surrounded by many water bodies, like lakes and rivers and with limited land transportation network. It could not offer much to education including schooling, in the past. But, given the agriculture-based living of people, pollution-less atmosphere, availability of abundance of land, encouragement and enthusiasm of the people around, possibility of research elements, like soil, water, environment, structures, appropriate technologies, etc. a catalytic development of the institution is very much promising. The institute is standing tall in the middle of the historical rice bowl of Kerala in spite of minor elements of pulling down. The University procured nearly 40 acres of land in Pulincunnu and constructed semi-permanent buildings for the conduct of classes and administration by 2000-2001. The College was shifted to own place by the academic year 2002-2003. Initiatives to construct a permanent building became fruitful when the first five storied building of Kuttanad having 4000 square metre habitable space was opened as the main building of CUCEK by the then Chief minister of Kerala, Sri. V S Achuthanandan, on 9th January 2010. A series of laboratory buildings, a library building and limited sporting facilities are housed by a mini-campus of CUCEK in nearly 3.5 acres apart from the main campus of academic and administrative infrastructure facilities.

Hostel Facilities

2.5

CUCEK do not have own hostels at the present. There are plans to build hostels but it will take time. presently there are many private hostels at the place. Many of them are recognized by the college. College doesnt own college buses also bus service is done by other private oraganizations. An average rental of 4500rs per month is needed. Rooms are available at rs 1400-2500 which accomodates 2-4 people

Alumni/Alumna

of the leading institutions which is an important landmark in the landscape of the higher education in India. In the recent NISCAIR ranking of research performance of Indian Universities CUSAT is 14th . In all India ranking among top 100 research institutions in India, CUSAT ranking fluctuates between 36 and 32 during the last 5 years( G Pratap, Curr Sc, 96, 1561, June 2009). As one of the highly reputed and internationally acclaimed Indian Universities, the objective of CUSAT is to promote graduate and postgraduate studies as well as advanced research in applied science, technology , social science and humanities. With its 28 departments and 9 Faculties CUSAT also has valuable inputs in the scenario of higher education through various specialized centers . Exam Structure

according to the 2015 scheme of the university. Examinations are done during the time which is comfortable for the students. two series examinations and semester exam takes place in each semester . Each semester includes 6 theory papers and 2 lab exams.Out of 100 marks for each subjects 60 marks should be obtained from the semester exam and remaining 40 marks are obtained by Series examinations, assignments and attendance

Admission

Registration for the CAT examination was done online and the notifications regarding the test was up to date n the official site of the university. After the registratoin an amount of rs.1000 was paid as the registration fee. Examination date and centre was informed by the month of march or april. Apart from the other engineering entrance examinations the CAT examination test is done using computers. the proceedures were easy in order to write the exam and admission. after announcing the results a counselling date was informed and as per the available seats i got admission in CSE branch

Faculty

4

The faculty members in the college are well qualified and experienced. Many of the faculty members have Phd and Mtech from reputed colleges. All the faculty members are teaching each one of us very friendly and knowledgeable. The faculty members concentrate more on their syllabus than the other activities of the students

The course curriculum is the worst. Teachers rush through the portions so that they can finish at the earliest. It may be because the university has a unjustifiable timetable. There is very little practicals given. The ones that are given are just for namesake.

The students usually start appearing for campus placements in their 6th semester. The training for the campus placements is started for all the students from the 4th semester. Many companies visited for campus placements. But one main problem is that most of them were low packages. Around 4LPA. Some were between 4-6 and a very few between 6-10. Most of them got placed in our batch in some company.
