What Students Say
Likes
- Placements and The Department of Training and Placements
- The library, which is my favourite spot to hang out
- The location, surrounded by mountains and the dal lake is a whole different vibe to wake up everyday to.
Dislikes
- In time for girls in hostels, a jail like feeling which makes me feel every single day that what karma had I done that I became a girl, why am I not priviledged as a boy
- Mess food, can be much better, at least can be brought to the edible mark
- The security guards. They treat you as if you really are a criminal if you are even 5 minutes late to the hostel or are outside the campus for 4 hours lol, I had never imagined that these things would exist in India
Course Curriculum Overview
I got into Computer Science Engineering and that was the sole reason why I came here. The CSE Department is quite good. The faculty members are kind, helpful, research-oriented, and talented in their own domains. Faculty: The student ratio is currently poor in CSE as compared to other departments here but it is improving day by day. The exams are taken timely and are based on what was taught in the class and assignments that we get over the course period.
Internships Opportunities
Many companies that come for placements hire students for internships, usually paid. If you are looking for research, then there are MoUs with different IITs and high-ranking NITs to hire students. It is compulsory for every student to do an eight weeks internship during the winter break before the sixth semester.
Placement Experience
For CSE, the placement ratio is 100%, ie either a student gets placed or goes for higher studies and does not sit for placements. The average package is 10lpa for CSE, 8-9 for IT, and around 8 for ECE. For other branches, it is around 4-5lpa. The highest package for the 2018 batch was 42.5lpa in Microsoft for a girl in CSE. Placements start at the end of the 6th semester. The department of Training and Placements takes care of it in the most dis splined and well-done manner and works hard. Almost 200-300 + companies visit in either online or offline mode. They offer both jobs and internships.
Fees and Financial Aid
For SC/ST students and families below 1 lac annual income, there are 0 tuition fees, yes I am not kidding, for income between 1-5lac, there is a certain fee waiver and general students and income above 5 lac have fees of 67.5k per semester tuition fees, hostel, and mess not included. It is the same as other NITs and IITs.
Campus Life
This is where it lacks, no campus life for girls, hostel in time is 5 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer, it feels like a jail. You cannot go out of campus after 4.30 pm and out of the hostel after 5 pm. Even if you are 1 minute late you are penalized, but considering the safety of girls it is needed here as construction is going on on the campus and there are a lot of workers around. Clubs are functional but they do not get enough funds, if they get then they make the most of it in all possible ways. The best event so far was TEDxNITSrinagar wherein speakers from all over India had come. Classrooms are well equipped, and smart and also have heaters which are necessary for Kashmir. The library is amazing.
Admission
Admission through the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and then all India Counseling via JOSAA and CSAB rounds like other IITs and NITs. Minimum JEE Mains cutoff should be cleared for that particular year. JEE Advanced is not mandatory.
