Remarks
Overall it is a very good experience staying over in my college. I still cherish those moments when I got into it. I feel like it was yesterday when I stepped into my hostel. My entire personality got changed.
Entrance Preview
I sat for IIT-JEE in 2009. I scored 269 and got a 1256 rank. I did pretty bad in chemistry and then I realized that chem is not my cup of tea. I needed to choose a branch that doesn't even touch basic chemistry ever. Hence I ended up choosing Aerospace Engineering. Regarding Aerospace I would like to be very specific.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was very peaceful. We need to hardly take 6 courses on an average every semester. Most courses consist of 6 credits. There were a few courses that were either half semester courses or required an extra number of classes in a semester. Credits were decided based upon the number of hours required in a week to teach that course.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, certainly we were always offered a nice stipend. I did three internships. My first internship was with a start-up called Zeus Numerix where I worked on Computational Fluid Dynamics. My second internship was with ISRO where I coded for IRNSS. And the third internship was with Airbus in Banglore where I worked in the innovation cells on their future product in the Indian market.
Placement Experience
At the end of the placement session, you will certainly get placed no matter what u have done in the last 4/5 years given you have a zeal to get placed. The average package was used to be somewhere close to 7 lakhs per year. There were firms from different sectors starting from the core to extreme non-core jobs like marketing, operations. Consultancy firms like McKinsey, Bain & Co., and BCG were like dream companies among students. Their packages were somewhere close to 12/13 lakhs per year. Core IT firms were good paymasters. They had a range from 12-150 lakhs per year depending upon the location.
College Events
IIT Bombay is all about extracurricular activities with less study. I still remember there was no single month when there is no event going on on the campus. Starting from freshie orientation in July till PAF in March. We have Mood Indigo one of the best college cultural festivals. The same goes for the technical festival Techfest. Every single year there was a footfall of close to 1.5 lakh.
Fee Structure And Facilities
It was not expensive in comparison to private institutes. But certainly, it was on a higher-end comparing other IITs due to the location of the institute.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
Many scholarships are there. I can't name any of them since I have not got any of them. But I remember the criteria and associations that used to offer them. One of based upon parents' annual salary, another was topping the year and many for research and presenting papers in international conferences. Even many departments offer scholarships through alumni networks.
Campus Life
The gender ratio was not good at IITs. Though extracurricular activities were always there to entertain as well as develop your personalities. Every hostel used to have their intro wing competitions and gala dinner every semester. Every hostel was allotted funds annual to conduct hostel activities. IIT Bombay's campus life is like staying in heaven. You are right in the center of Mumbai city. You have all the facilities and no rush, no tension which is just outside the campus gate.
Hostel Facilities
Mess food became hygienic after the privatization of mess. though hostels infra is still needed to improve. But new hostels were very clean and having modern facilities. Old hostels had a college culture. People used to stay like families.
Alumni/Alumna
IIT B has a very good alumni network. Apart from that, you could find the Student Alumni Relation Committee to work on improving it more. This association calls up every alumni in December to know them more, It is like a liaison between students and alumni. Apart from that alumni certainly help students in getting through placements.
Exam Structure
It was entirely dependent upon the professor. Evaluation in a course could be based upon a few tests or it could be a semester-long process consist of daily/weekly quizzes. Many processors were used to conducting open book exams.
Faculty
Especially in our department, the faculties were very nice. Every single faculty used to know each one of us. We used to have many informal events to interact with our faculties. I still remember that one of my faculty invited me to his place for dinner and I
