My Stay at IIT Palakkad

Total students are around 700 while total faculties are over 70. Many faculties are young Phds who has an inclination towards the research in their respective fields. Other than that there are some senior faculties from old IITs, some having corporate background as well with lot of industry connections which has proved beneficial for students on multiple occasion to grab internships and jobs. There are student representative for each course who put forth the concerns on the table of Course Committee Meetings which are well received by the faculties and appropriate steps are taken to mitigate any hurdles in the smooth functioning of the course. There are also feedback forms for each course towards the completion of it to help faculties get more honest insights on their teaching skills and methodologies. There are two quizzes and one end semester exam for each course per semester. Exams and quizzes mostly examine the problem solving skills and out of box thinking of students. There are range of question from easy, moderate and high in each exam which plays a vital on deciding the grading for a semester. A course can be easily passed if a student focuses on the lectures itself. Sometimes external book readings are required based on the course structure. There are also practical labs along with theory classes for the courses like Data Structure and Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, Compilers, Networking which facilitates the hands on experience for the same.

There were usually two internship profiles- product one and research one. I have interned in Adobe for the summer of 2020 for around a duration of 3 months as Product Intern which was a remote work internship amidst the pandemic. I worked in a E2E Testing Team under Cloud Technology department. The company is among the best paying internship firms with stipend of 1 Lac per month.

There is indeed campus placement. Career and Development Cell(CDC) is responsible for inviting companies for the campus placements. The CSE branch usually gets 100% placement with average package of 11-12 LPA and highest being 40LPA. Arista, ZOOM, Sprinklr, Adobe, Mathworks, Cargill, GE are among many companies from where our students have got offers. Many people also opt for higher studies at various oversees universities.

There is tuition fee + hostel fee per semester. Without any scholarship, the tuition fee is around 1 lac 8 thousand for per semester and hostel fee around 30k which includes Mess fees as well. There are many scholarships to wave the tuition fee for category students and people with financial income less than 5 Lac PA. Average placement for CSE branch in particular may be around 11-12 LPA as of now.

Life at campus is healthy, fun and productive. Multiple technical and cultural clubs are headed by student Heads elected generally based on voting on nominations filled by the members of particular club. In technical domain, some of the clubs are is YACC( Yet Another Coding Club), Robotics Club, Finance Club, Data Science Club etc. Among many cultural clubs there are active clubs running high whole year such as Literary Society( Akshar), Music Club (Vadhya), Dance Club, Drama Club etc. There exist a Central Library in our campus with all require course books, fiction/non fiction, technical journals, newspapers etc. Various sports club- Football, Cricket, Table-Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Chess etc function at high tempo throughout the year. Selections for teams to represent the institute in annual Inter-IIT Sports Meet for various sports are made with the help of coaches and club heads. The weather is damn beautiful for the whole year except initial 2-3 months of the year which are quite hot to be honest.

There are double and triple sharing hostels in our campus with common bathrooms mostly. The food at mess is debatable topic but it has improved significantly over the years of my stay at the campus. Students representatives have always been aggressive and fast forwarded to improve the food quality. There is also an Amenity Center for the students to enjoy the fast food and drinks.
