Remarks
I attended the college for its highly qualified teachers, good placements and proximity to my home. The college has been offering B.Tech courses for over 2 decades now and has built a reputation for providing quality new courses. It is one of the oldest and most reputable colleges in Dehradun and any student in Uttarakhand aspiring for a B.Tech degree can opt for this college, albeit if not selected in IIT Roorkee or GB Pant. It is also well furnished with good quality hostels, library, and mess. The college however does not has any entrance test for its admission and thus suffers from poor quality of students from across the country.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum in Mechanical subjects was extensive, broad, and well defined. The faculty members used books of famous authors in class to teach concepts. Some of the teachers have good experience and come from prestigious institutes of the country whereas the rest have just an M-Tech degree from some University. During my tenure in DIT, there were approx 360 students with 6 sections and there were 2-3 teachers for a particular course. There were two set of exams- midterm and end-term that were held during the mid and end of the semester respectively. The exams tested a basic understanding of the concepts taught in class and had an easy to moderate level of difficulty.
Placement Experience
The placement performance of the college for the mechanical branch is not so praiseworthy. There are only a handful of companies that visit the college for core mechanical jobs. As a result, only a few students get placed in mechanical jobs while the rest either opt for jobs in software companies or prepare for post-graduation. However, the placement situation is better for CSE and IT branches with a large number of software companies and startups visiting the campus each year. With the Covid situation in place, the placement scenario looks even bleaker for mechanical, electrical and electronics branches with CSE and IT branches still expected to see good jobs. I started preparing for MBA during my final year to have a backup option if I didn't get a place anywhere. However, I was able to ace both the placement and the exam in the end.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees for a 4-year B-Tech program during my time at DIT was around 7 lacs, excluding hostel and mess fees. There is financial assistance available for students with conservative backgrounds. On an ROI basis, the college is good for day scholars who can study without staying in hostels. By availing the hostel and mess service, the total cost for 4 years comes around 12-13 lacs. There are buses for pick-up and drop services for the students. The fee for the bus is approx 21000 per annum. I was placed in Ashok Leyland with an annual package of 7 lakh.
Campus Life
The college has a beautiful campus surrounded by lush Green valleys and picturesque mountains. The infrastructure is one of the finest with well-built buildings that offer great facilities in classrooms, washrooms, and staff rooms. A couple of years ago, a new cafeteria also got open with well-built interiors and a beautiful ambiance. It has good seating availability and offers amazing views of hills from Mussoorie. The campus also has a magnificent library that hoasts hundreds of books from varied subjects, good seating, and Mac PCs for student accessibility. There are two fests conducted each year- Tech Fest and Cultural Fest.
