Remarks
VIT is an awesome Institution. The management is strong and rules are enforced strictly. Many may complain that the campus is over-regulated but that's a perception. Academics, extracurricular and campus life is good. Vellore can be a boring town but the campus is happening. Word of Advice: Do anything but do not break rules, you might end up paying a lot of fines.
Entrance Preview
The entrance exam for B.Tech courses is via VITEEE (VIT engineering entrance exam). The exam is held every year, though it was more of a pen-paper test during my time, they have switched to an online format from the last couple of years. The declare the merit list and based on the ranking, you are called for counseling. VIT is a reputed institution and is graded o of the best private colleges in India. This made me all the more interested in college.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is fantastic. They have digitized most of the reading material and hence access to books and presentations is quite simple. The flexible curriculum system helps in pacing the courses according to our own convenience and hence is very smooth. VIT emphasizes a lot on the project-based education system and hence the academic environment is more conducive to research and innovation.
Internships Opportunities
The internship is generally limited to branches like computer science and IT. Other students need to apply independently although the faculty helps the students a lot in terms of application assistance.
Placement Experience
The brightest spot about VIT University is its placement. The placement on the campus is almost 100%. More than 250 companies come to the campus with many giving out packages in excess of 6 Lac. Mass Recruiters like Accenture, Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, etc. visit the campus and recruit thousands of students. They offer a standard pay package between 3-3.5 lac per annum.
College Events
Gravitas: Technical Festival, Riviera: Cultural Festival. VIT holds one of the most awesome college festivals among engineering colleges pan-India. They are widely appreciated and students from many colleges across Chennai, Bangalore, and neighboring areas visit the campus.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee is at par with most of the private Engineering colleges in India. Though they have drastically increased the fee, it is comparable to other engineering colleges. The fee is average but in case of monetary support, loan facilities are available. The campus also provides banking facilities for students as ATMs and banks are available on the campus.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, toppers are awarded 13,000 per year as scholarship top 10 of each branch are given 1000 Rs. VIT gives free education to district toppers of Tamil Nadu. Loan facilities are easily available.
Campus Life
VIT has a healthy gender ratio. It has abundant extracurricular facilities. Gyms, basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools, etc are available for both boys and girls. The campus has an adequate food court and canteen facilities. VIT also has a lot of Clubs that one can join. VIT has a very strict discipline policy and any act of indiscipline is not tolerated. Hence, you will rarely see a case of ragging and/or any type of ethnic, gender discrimination.
Hostel Facilities
VIT has a LOT of hostels and Mess options. The food is okay, it may be a little better if you opt for the special mess. VIT offers the option of 1,2,4,6 bedded options in case of men's and women's hostel both in A/C and non- A/C option. Though as a 1st year, you are generally given 4 or 6 beds. 2nd-year students can opt for any sharing. Hostel rooms are allotted by counseling based on your academic ranking and cumulative ranking.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is quite strong. Seniors do help juniors. VIT clubs are a good way to interact with peer groups. VIT alumni are spread across the globe and help juniors in terms of studies abroad. Alumni also influence the placement on the campus.
Exam Structure
A semester consists of 2 min semester exam (called CAT) and 1 term end exam. The exam reoccur every other month, hence depending on the semester you are in, the workload varies. The classes and labs can be mixed, i.e both in the morning and evening and hence some days could be hectic than the others.
Faculty
The faculty is competent and is good in the area of their expertise. However, I would not rate them the best in the country. The qualification of most of the teachers are Ph.D. is may often be difficult to understand them due to their Tamil accent. It is hence advisable for people to learn on their own. The attendance criteria are quite strict and teachers may not give leeway if you are missing the 75% cut-off.
