Remarks
This college will give you countless memories and prepare you for the world. This college can truly benefit with some infrastructural advancements and better labs. But no complains whatsoever. Students can be asked to be more inclined towards having a research bend of mind too.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is taken from Mumbai University's guidelines which makes the curriculum rigid and bloated with age-old content. Curriculum hasn't yet accomodated the modern technologies like ML and AI to any extent. End semester exams have 1 or 2 days gap between them which is fair but keeps the students on toes to cover the vast theoretical syllabus.
Placement Experience
The placement scenario of the college is better than the comparable colleges partly because of the brand name and because students are also allowed to sit for the placements of Vidyavihar campus. The training and placement tries to get internships which are mostly unpaid. The average package for computer science is around 4.5 lacs and it is lower for branches like EXTC.
College Events
The two main annual events celebrated here are our cultural fest i.e. Surge and our technical fest i.e. Renaissance. The students and faculties alike are very enthusiastic about it and it happens at a fairly large scale. The other smaller events like workshops, crash course, training and placement 101s are also organised.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees structure is at par with other colleges in Mumbai, it can be called feasible considering the location of the college. The college fees can be waived by several merit cum need based scholarship from Somaiya Trust and economically backward scholarship from the government. The college provides full assistance to students in order to provide them the scholarship if they qualify.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are two kinds of scholarships - the ones from Somaiya Trust and the ones from the Government. Somaiya Trust offers scholarship to students with a good CGPA and with less family income. While government scholarships are for OBC/SC/ST students and they're given 50% fees waiver provided their annual income is less than 8 lacs per annum.
Campus Life
Labs are strictly moderate as some labs have poor air conditioning and damaged apparatus, although the recently constructed IT extension is well equipped and a charm to study at. The gender ratio is quite imbalanced, a educated guess would be 3:10 (girls:boys). The students are involved in Student Council and various other student committees like CSI, IEEE, IETE, IET and ACS and these students are given good support and attendance allowance by the college. Also these are various clubs like programming club (Infinite Loop), satellite club (New Leap Initiative), robotics group (ROBOCON) and our magazine club (Aura). This helps in wonderful overall development of the student.
Hostel Facilities
I've opted for the hostel in the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus and I can't complain a single bit about the seamless facilities provided by them. Mine is a triple sharing room with attached bathouroom and it is a wonderful experience being here. The mess food is amazing and unlike any other hostels, this food is something I'm proud of as a hosteler. The room gets cleaned every other day by the cleaners and it is included in our fees structure.
Alumni/Alumna
Our alumni has left the college on a good note, some managed to climb to the big giants like Google and Emirates. Most students look forward to pursue higher education like MS, MTech and MBA. A fair share gets placed and start earning.
Admission
Being a computer science enthusiast, I had it clear that I'd prefer branch over Institute. I had a score around 98 percentile which gave me equal chance for VIT CSE, SAKEC CSE but I chose this because of the name, facility and faculty that comes from Somaiya Trust. No regrets at all. I took admission thourough vacancy round or against CAP round.
Faculty
Faculty is kind and well qualified, they know their subjects to a respectable extent, many professors are doing projects and provide the students to be the part of the same. Although some teachers are not up to the mark and have bookish to almost nil knowledge. But that's how most colleges are. Overall satisfactory.
