Remarks
Positive remarks include good reputation of college, great placements and good exposure to subjects with industry related changes recently happening. Also, extra curricular and co-curricular activities are given importance. Negative remarks are that there are no internship semesters which helps a student to know the industry better. Funding to students in extracurricular and co-curricular activities is given but the amount is quite low. Laboratories should be developed for betterment in future.
Course Curriculum Overview
They are taking efforts to align the course curriculum with the industry as soon as possible. There were many subjects which are currently outdated but good thing is that they are trying to improve as much as possible. Our semester is typically of 4 months. After a month there is term test 1 and similarly term test 2. These range from 3 days to a week depending on the course syllabus and number of courses taken by a student. Then there is a one month gap to complete the syllabus and in the 4th month there is submission, vivas and semester exam. Usually there is a one day gap between 2 exams unless there is a weekend.
Placement Experience
The placements and job opportunities for mechanical engineering are tremendous. There was a 100% record for placements in SPCE until I graduated. The college does provide internship opportunities. Stipend for each depends on the type of job, company, role, etc. Some companies give and some do not. Internships are basically for 1.5-2 months as there isn't a separate semester for internships. There were 4 internships which were provided by college namely, BEST, Air India, IDEMI, and Siemens. Out of these only Siemens was a paid internship with a pre placement offer, there was an online test and an interview. I couldn't go through the interview round.I did an unpaid internship at Air India Pvt. Ltd the previous semester before applying to Siemens for a month. The experience was really awesome as getting an exposure in the Base Maintenance Division and being the only Aircraft Division in Mumbai felt like grabbing a good opportunity.
College Events
There are many events celebrated in the college throughout. I was in the Mechanical Engineering Students' Association (MESA) which organized various treks, blood donation camps and most importantly SPCE Cup and MESA cup for sports enthusiasts. Techincal, cultural and sports festivals were also celebrated and named SPECTRA, SPACE, and SPOORTHI respectively. These events enlightened each student's management skills and their hidden talents.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is quite feasible. Since, my college is government aided autonomous college, our fee was almost half of the ones who had joined private colleges affiliated with Mumbai University. I was from General Open Category and this was the case, but for other castes the fee was much lesser. It was typical of how SPCE supported the backward classes in terms of fee as well.
Fees and Financial Aid
There were many scholarships offered to meritorious students. They were awarded every year to top 3 rankers in each class and even to Rank holders in some particular subjects. Then, there were various scholarships given to backward classes as well. As far as I remember they had to bring a certain class in exams.
Campus Life
There were many extracurricular activities organized by student committees itself. Various sports events like MESA & SPCE cup to give glimpse of sports to students.Various clubs like SPCE Racing, SPCE Robocon, and SPCE W.A.V.E and TESA for providing practical exposure and use theoritical knowledge into practice. The labs and workshops in SPCE need tremendous improvement. They are not good at all. Only CNC lab is well maintained. Rest all labs have become quite old.
Alumni/Alumna
Be it applying for further studies abroad, in India or for getting help in placements, our senior students always provide a helping hand. The alumni network is quite strong which is why there are placements happening at a larger scale at SPCE. There is a meeting of Alumni's every year which has a lot of involvement. Whoever gets time attends this meet.
Admission
Sardar Patel College of Engineering is a well renowned engineering college in Mumbai. (shortly known as S.P.C.E.) There are 2 ways to get into S.P.C.E. either by getting good grades in 12th and an entrance exam or by doing diploma. I gave 12th Board exams and during our time we had to give JEE Mains. Then, a cumulative 50-50 percentile was counted by taking Physics, Chemistry and Maths marks scored in HSC exams and marks scored in JEE all over Maharashtra. My percentile was 98.46 and I got into Sardar Patel College of Engineering in the 2nd round itself.
Faculty
We have a very experienced faculty teaching various subjects. Obviously, there is a mix in the teaching of different faculty members. Some are good in teaching, some are not that good. Maximum number of teachers have good industry experience and urge students to write papers. When there is a need, they will help in projects undertaken by students as well.
