I’m currently pursuing B.Tech in Textile Technology at IIT Delhi, and I’d say it’s definitely worth it. The course is structured well, and while the exams can be challenging, passing them isn’t too tough. We have fantastic placement records, with over 1,000 companies visiting the campus. The highest package last year was an astonishing 2.5 crore, and the average was about 20 lakh per annum. Plus, the campus has a great library and various clubs that keep things exciting. I’m planning to focus on civil services after graduation, but I know many of my peers are keen on corporate jobs, especially with the quality of internships we’re offered. Overall, I’m enjoying my time here!

I shared my thoughts on a similar question before -

Some people criticize this branch as:

  • A useless branch
  • Non-effective utilization of IIT funds
  • Future job scope - non-core
  • Ultra easy to get marks and grades

After taking a course in the Textile department, my perspective shifted:

  • Completely useless branch
  • Burning IIT money
  • Future Scope - be a tailor for the rest of your life
  • Ultra difficult to get marks and grades

The administration should consider removing the B.Tech in Textile and focus solely on M.Tech, PhD, and research programs like the pure sciences departments.

Doing a B.Tech in Textile Technology from IIT Delhi has been an interesting journey for me. Honestly, I chose this course because of my JEE rank. The faculty-to-student ratio is around 15:1, which means we get plenty of attention from professors, most of whom hold PhDs. The curriculum is quite manageable compared to other branches, giving us time to participate in extracurriculars.

In terms of placements, it’s impressive! More than 90% of students get placed, with the highest package going up to 2.5 crore per annum. I’m just in my first year, so I haven't experienced internships yet, but I hear companies like Amazon and Google come for placements. The campus life is vibrant with annual fests like Rendezvous and tech events like Tryst. Overall, I feel it's worth it if you're passionate about textiles!

It's pretty chill!

Textile students have a lighter workload. They often engage in various extracurricular activities, like sports, clubs, and holding multiple Positions of Responsibility (PORs). This gives you ample time for personality development. You'll encounter a diverse group of people in Textile. Many are preparing for UPSC, some dive into coding, and others explore entrepreneurship.

Just a heads-up: students from other branches might poke fun at you because of your choice (seriously).

Thank you!

I’ve spoken to several people connected with IIT Delhi. They mentioned that actual placement numbers are often not disclosed, but we do know the highest and lowest figures.

This year, only 30 percent of the students who participated in placements secured jobs. The highest salary offered is 35 LPA, while the lowest is 6 LPA. The average salary stands around 10–11 LPA this year. Many well-known companies visited the campus, offering roles such as junior analyst, fresher engineer, and more.

The internship scenario is significantly better compared to placements. The highest stipend offered so far is 1 LPA per month, with the lowest being 15k per month.

Most students tend to opt for non-core companies during placements. Many of these non-core companies do not have branch-specific criteria; they primarily focus on CGPA and extracurricular activities. Here’s a list of some of those companies:

  • Consultancies: McKinsey, BCG, Bain, KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, etc. (except EY)
  • Analytics: Fractal Analytics, etc.
  • Banks: Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, Capital One, etc.
  • Start-ups: Flipkart, Rocket Internet group of start-ups, etc.

While the data may not be exact, it provides a fair idea of the situation. Hope this helps! Good luck!
