Is it worth doing a B.Tech Material Science Engineering from IIT Delhi or not? What are its placement records and whats your experience with this college so far?

Doing a B.Tech in Material Science Engineering from IIT Delhi is absolutely worth it! I've been here for a couple of years, and the curriculum is quite interesting. We get to dive into different phases and properties of materials, and there’s a good mix of DFT and machine learning models. The placement stats are impressive, with around 80% of students getting placed. Big names like Google, Amazon, and TCS come to recruit us, and the average package for 2022-2023 was around 20 LPA, which is solid. Plus, there's a great campus life with lots of clubs and activities that help you grow as a person.

A2A. I'm not from an IIT, but I did study material science as part of my coursework. It's similar to any other subject: theory, problems, applications, and fascinating research areas. I believe IITs are actively researching Smart Materials technology.

Being in an IIT also allows you to witness groundbreaking work, like:

• And much more!

However, there is a small issue. It seems challenging for a Material Science student to find field jobs. Most opportunities are research-oriented, whether in companies, CSIR labs, ISRO, or elsewhere. For more details about the subject and not just IITs, feel free to comment!

I’m currently pursuing my B.Tech in Material Science Engineering at IIT Delhi, and so far, it has been a fantastic experience. The admission process through JEE was a bit of a hassle, especially the JoSAA counselling, but it was worth it. The course itself has some outdated topics, but overall it's engaging. What excites me most are the placement opportunities. Around 80% of my seniors got placed last year, and the highest package was a whopping 4 crore per annum! The college has a good support system for internships too, with lots of companies offering stipends ranging from 20k to 20 lakh per month. You can't go wrong with IIT Delhi!

The field is exciting and interesting! However, the number of jobs in India is dwindling, even for IIT graduates. Many companies view this degree as quite ordinary. Teaching positions are also on the decline. But don’t let that discourage you! I believe you should pursue Materials Science because it is the “Mater” (mother) of all subjects. If you can study and specialize in Materials Science, you'll gain a fundamental understanding that applies to many areas.

And why choose IIT? Is there anything better in India? Recently, I was part of an interview panel for a foreign company. We were instructed to focus only on basic concepts and applications. There were numerous candidates from IITs, NITs, BITS, Manipal, DIAT, etc., but we ultimately selected four from IITs. The difference between the IIT candidates and the others was stark. The gap was significant. The rest tended to provide textbook answers, while the IIT candidates showcased a deeper understanding.

Honestly, if you want to do B.Tech in Material Science Engineering, IIT Delhi is the way to go. The course is fun and covers various aspects of materials science, which I find pretty fascinating. I’m in my second year, and I’ve heard from seniors that the placement cell works really well. They’ve had around 80% placement rates, with top companies recruiting regularly. The average package last year was 20 LPA, and it's amazing to think some students even got offers as high as 4 crore! Plus, campus life is vibrant, with clubs that really help in building your confidence and skills. Overall, I’d say it’s a great choice!
