This was the Semester 1 breakdown of fees for UG students who took admission in 2023–24:

While this includes adjustments for JOSAA counseling fees and some one-time security deposits, it excludes mess charges. The breakdown for the second semester was as follows (General/OBC with Annual Family income > ? 5 Lakh):

  • ? 1,05,750/- for Tuition & Exams
  • ? 26,800/- for Mess
  • ? 13,250/- for Hostel accommodation

This comes to a grand total of ? 1,45,800/-.

Here are some screenshots from the prospectus to clarify: The biggest chunk of fees is, of course, the tuition fee (as shown above).

(I don’t even know what the Student Distress Fund Scheme is or that it even exists!)

Additionally, there are multiple scholarship opportunities that arise once you are in IIT Delhi, a topic that definitely deserves a separate post.

It depends on your category and family income.

1. If you belong to the SC/ST or PWD category, you get a 100% fee waiver on tuition fees, regardless of your family's income. You only need to pay for mess and hostel fees, along with some charges like internet, library, and examination fees (around 50k in 1 year). The mess charge is refundable after 3–4 months of payment (the refund does not depend on your performance in college).

2. If you belong to the General/OBC category, you have to pay tuition fees, which depend on your family income:

  • If your family income is less than 1 lakh, you also get a 100% fee waiver, but your mess and hostel fees will not be refunded.
  • If your family income is between 1 lakh and 5 lakh, you pay 1/3rd of the tuition fee, which is around 40k per semester (40k × 2 + 50k = 1.30 lakh in a year).
  • If your family income is greater than 5 lakh, you will pay 100% of the tuition fee, which is 1.10 lakh per semester (1.10 lakh × 2 + 50k = 2.70 lakh in a year).

However, General/OBC category students can receive scholarships if they perform well in college, but only the tuition fee gets refunded, not the hostel and mess fees. For example, even if you are a 10-pointer, you will still need to pay 50k in a year.

Hope this helps!

The approximate fees per semester (6 months) are as follows:

INSTITUTE FEE
Particulars
Amount
Caution Money (One Time, Refundable)
?4,000
One Time Fees
?3,500
Tuition Fee (per Semester)
?1,00,000
Other fees (per Semester)
?7,300
Annual Fees
?500
Total
?1,15,300

This is just the institute fees (hostel fees are not included). This breakdown is for the first semester; from the second semester onward, the one-time fees are excluded.

Additionally, there is a fee waiver system at IITs:

  • If your parental income is less than one lakh per annum, there will be a full remission of tuition fees (?1 lakh).
  • If it falls between ?1 lakh and ?5 lakh, there will be a two-thirds remission of tuition fees.

They also provide interest-free loans to students!
