This was the Semester 1 breakdown of fees for UG students who took admission in 2023–24:

While this includes adjustments for JOSAA counseling fees and some one-time security deposits, it does not cover mess charges. The breakdown for the second semester (General/OBC with Annual Family income > ? 5 Lakh) was as follows:

  • ? 1,05,750 for Tuition & Exams
  • ? 26,800 for Mess
  • ? 13,250 for Hostel accommodation

This brings the grand total to ? 1,45,800!

As you can see, the biggest chunk of fees is, of course, the tuition fee (as visible above).

(I’m not even aware of what the Student Distress Fund Scheme is or that it exists.)

Additionally, there are multiple scholarship opportunities that arise once you are in IIT Delhi, a topic that definitely deserves a separate post!

The cost for pursuing B.Tech in Engineering Physics at IIT Delhi can be significant. For those in the OPEN category, tuition fees are full price, while OBC, SC, and ST students get some fee relief. You also have to pay for hostel and mess, which all students do. It's a bit much, but given the excellent faculty and campus life, many of us feel it's a worthy investment for our future.

I can provide information about the current fees at IIT Delhi. Tuition fees at other IITs may vary by around 20%, and mess fees can differ by 50% compared to IIT Delhi.

Total expenses (excluding pocket money, of course) depend on your parents' annual income and your category.

  • 1. If you belong to the general or OBC category and your parents' annual income is greater than 5L per annum, you will pay around 105k per semester as tuition fee and 15k as mess fee. So, total expenses are approximately 240k per year.
  • 2. If you belong to the general or OBC category but your parents' income is less than 5L per annum and your CGPA and last semester's SGPA are above 6.0 (which are quite easy to achieve), your tuition fee will be refunded. In this case, you will only need to pay the mess fee (15k per semester), totaling just 30k per year.
  • 3. If you belong to SC/ST, both your tuition fee and mess fee are waived, meaning you don’t have to pay anything!

Additionally, there are various donor scholarships available for students.

At IIT Delhi, the total cost for B.Tech Engineering Physics includes tuition fees, hostel charges, and mess fees. For OPEN category students, the tuition fees are pretty steep, but for others, there’s some concession. Don’t forget that the hostel facilities are decent, and the mess food is surprisingly good! So, while the expenses are high, the experience you gain here is invaluable.
