Is doing B.Tech Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi any good?

You don’t need an MTech to work for a company with a production facility (like IOC or any of the pharmaceuticals). If you're not looking for a field job but rather an office or research position, you're likely overqualified for a plant job.

You can end up in a good engineering college…just check the positions available in various employment weeklies. A starting salary of 1–1.2 lacs can be expected just based on the ‘IIT Delhi’ tag.

I’m pursuing B.Tech Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi, and I can confidently say it’s worth it! The courses are very structured, with core subjects that dive deep into the principles of chemical engineering. The faculty-student ratio is 1:15, which means we get good attention from professors. I’m also benefiting from a Merit cum Means scholarship, which helps a lot with the fees. Plus, the campus life is vibrant with various fests like Rendezvous and Tryst. B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi is an incredible opportunity. The hostel facilities are good, and we get a comfortable room along with decent meals. The library is massive, with over 2 lakh books and journals, which is perfect for research and studying. Doing B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi is definitely a great choice! The curriculum covers all the essential topics like Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Chemical Reaction Engineering. Plus, the faculty here is top-notch, and most have done extensive research in their fields. I’m currently in my 6th semester, and I can already feel the impact of the rigorous training. The placements are impressive too; around 85% of students get placed in companies like Google and Amazon. You can really build a strong career in this field.

I assume you have a rank between 1000–2000 in JEE Advanced. Chemical Engineering was once a thriving branch, but it seems to have reached a saturation point. The demand for Chemical Engineers isn't as high as for Computer Science graduates these days.

Regarding placements in core sectors, IIT Delhi's Chemical Engineering (or Chemical at any IIT) doesn’t fare well. Companies are recruiting less for Chemical Engineers and tend to prefer M.Tech or research-oriented candidates for core roles.

However, the average placements for the entire batch stand at 8 Lakhs per year. Impressive, right? This is largely due to opportunities in non-core sectors. Many companies from finance and management actively hire students from IITs, regardless of their branch. (So, a CSE undergrad and a textile engineering undergrad are essentially on equal footing!)

In conclusion, if you have a strong passion for chemistry or want to experience the vibrant life at IIT Delhi for the next 4–5 years, then Chemical Engineering could be a great choice for you. But if your primary focus is on good placements and a better future, then pursuing CSE at newer IITs might be the way to go.
