Is NIT Calicut worth joining??

This question isn't quite enough to give a full answer because there are a few things that need to be clarified first, like whether you're asking about an undergraduate or postgraduate program and which branch you're interested in. But to keep it simple, if you're considering a BTech, the academics at NIT Calicut are solid, especially strong in CSE and ECE. However, core branches don't do as well in placements compared to these two. The college is pretty strict overall. Hostels are on campus, and students can switch their mess each month, with eight messes to choose from. The cultural events are top-notch. The climate is moderate, but the campus is about 20 km away from the city. The student body is quite diverse, though most teachers are from the south.

For PG courses, if you're not from Kerala, you might want to consider other options. Placement opportunities for PG core branches are lacking, and accommodations are subpar, located about a kilometer away from campus on hilly terrain. PG students get only 8 casual leaves, unlike the 15 offered at other colleges. The facilities aren't top-tier for PG, and there's not much of a college life experience for PG students.

To wrap it up, I'd rate the UG programs an 8 out of 10, while PG programs get a 4 out of 10.

Well, whether NIT Calicut is worth joining really depends on what you're looking for. I'm a student there now. If you're aiming for a high-paying job, then it's definitely a good choice. Personally, I haven't enjoyed my time here as much because the college didn't quite match up to what I expected. But to be fair, it's not all the college's fault. Some of it is on me.

Back in my junior college days at Narayana and Chaitanya, things were pretty tough. Many of us are pushed to study there even if we need a break. Coming from Narayana, I didn't keep up with my peers because I was always tired. They had us up at 6 AM and studying until 11 PM, leaving us just 5-6 hours to sleep. But that's in the past now.

I somehow got into NITC. Once I arrived, I felt a sense of freedom since nobody was pushing me to study anymore. So, I kind of slacked off in my first two semesters. This isn't unusual for students from Telugu states who attended schools like mine.

Luckily, I didn't fail any of my exams, although I nearly failed chemistry in my first semester, scraping by with the lowest passing grade. I kept telling myself I would study hard and get good grades, but that never really happened. I'm hoping this time will be different.

Thanks for sticking with me through that story. As for your question, getting good grades here is tougher than at other NITs because the exams are some of the toughest. A CGPA above 7.5 should be enough for placements, so aim for that. Don't waste time like I did or take it easy in your first year. Every year counts.

This year, CSE students did really well in placements, with an average package of around 15 LPA, which is better than some new IIMs. ECE is the hardest department because it involves a lot of projects. I can't speak for every department, but the computer science department at NIT Calicut is top-notch, just behind the leading IITs and a few other NITs like Trichy, Allahabad, and Surathkal. Big names like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Morgan Stanley come to the campus for hiring. It's like a dream come true to study here.

The learning environment is very engaging; teachers are supportive, and the industry respects NIT Calicut students a lot. Scoring high isn't easy, as there's no spoon-feeding, so you really need to put in the effort. In short, if you're serious about learning, this college is a great choice. But if you're not ready to work hard, it might not be the place for you.
