Here's a rundown of why IIT Hyderabad might be a great choice compared to the older IITs:

The AI department stands out with top-notch faculty. Quite a few professors from IIT Bombay have moved to IIT Hyderabad as it is expanding quickly. You can find them listed as former faculty on the IIT Bombay CSE website.

In case you are curious about the expertise of the teachers in the CSE department, you'll be pleased to know that a couple of them earned their PhDs from Stanford, and another from Cornell, which speaks volumes about their credentials. Plus, Dr. M Vidyasagar is a notable professor in the AI department.

The campus offers superior academic facilities, with modern classrooms and impressive buildings.

IIT Hyderabad has a strong connection with Japan, allowing students to intern at Japanese companies and participate in student exchange programs, making it easier to visit Japan.

Finally, the hostel rooms are cleaner and more comfortable, adding to the overall experience.

Academics: IIIT Hyderabad is on par with the older IITs, if not better. The courses offered are outstanding, and the research opportunities are top-notch. Professors and senior students here are very knowledgeable and contribute positively to the learning atmosphere.

Campus life: In my opinion, IIIT Hyderabad falls short compared to the older IITs in this area. The campus is small, and being a newer institution compared to the old IITs, it doesn't quite match up. The smaller community means you get to know everyone and can easily reach out for help, but it does limit the scale of college events and activities. Still, that doesn't mean students at IIIT Hyderabad don't have a good time.

Here are the main upsides and downsides of studying at IIIT Hyderabad.

Upsides:

  • There's no reservation policy, which is a big plus at IIIT Hyderabad.
  • The faculty here is genuinely great and very supportive.
  • Research is highly emphasized at the undergraduate level, and you will be doing real research, not just talk. Instead of traditional departments, there are Research Centres, which speaks volumes about the research environment.
  • The coding culture is top-notch. You won't find anything like it anywhere else in the country.
  • From the very first day, you'll dive into core subjects. There's none of that first-year fluff like in IITs or NITs.

Downsides:

  • If you're in CSE but not keen on coding, you'll find it tough to keep up.
  • There aren't as many cultural and sports activities.
