Life at IIT Bombay can be quite different depending on who you ask. Some students say it's amazing, while others might find it challenging. It really depends on your personality and what you're looking for. Let me break it down for you.
HOSTELS AND FOOD
If you're moving away from home for the first time, the hostel and food situation might be a bit of a shock. Recently, new students have been placed in Hostels 15 and 16, which are pretty decent, but the older hostels, like 2 through 9, are quite cramped. My room, for example, is just 9ft by 7ft. The food here isn't quite like home-cooked meals, but it's generally okay, though there are exceptions. From my experience of staying in hostels for nine years, the food quality at IIT Bombay is actually better than most. The girls' hostels, 10 and 11, are really nice, and the ones for MTech and PhD students, Hostels 12 to 14, are also quite good.
ACADEMICS AND ATTENDANCE
The college requires 80% attendance, just like many others. If you don't meet this, you might have to retake the course. They use relative grading here, which means your grade depends on how the rest of the class performs. This can make things more competitive than you might expect. Some students feel that the academic pressure is intense and wonder if they would have had an easier time at another IIT. Every year, more than 10% of students end up failing at least one subject.
SPORTS
IIT Bombay offers great sports facilities, including cricket, football, athletics, and many others. First-year students can be selected for sports training under the NSO program. There are beginner camps and advanced summer camps for those who want to improve their skills. Most hostels have courts and gyms, which makes sports a big deal here. In fact, IIT Bombay won the INTER IIT SPORTS MEET in 2017.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Culture is also a big part of life here. There are clubs for music, dance, photography, and more, all run by students. The clubs participate in competitions at both national and international levels, and they’ve won awards too. IIT Bombay came second in the INTER IIT CULTURALS MEET 2017.
TECHNICAL CLUBS
There are several clubs for students interested in technology, like AUV-IITB and the Innovation Cell. These clubs have earned international awards and are great for tech enthusiasts.
EXPOSURE AND MANAGEMENT
The exposure you get at IIT Bombay is incredible. The management skills you learn by organizing events like MOOD INDIGO, TECHFEST, ABHYUDAY, and E-SUMMIT are invaluable. You get to meet international figures, attend exclusive seminars, and more.
So, with all these opportunities, why would anyone dislike it? Often, first-year students don't focus enough on academics and get caught up in TV shows or gaming. This leads to poor grades, and when they try to catch up later, they struggle because their basics aren't strong. This can make life stressful and hectic as they try to balance everything.
Honestly, life at IIT Bombay has been a mix of hard work and enjoyment. I’m in Civil Engineering, and while the curriculum is rigorous, it’s also incredibly practical. We get to learn not just through lectures but also through site visits and lab sessions. The professors are mostly very qualified and passionate about teaching.
The exams can be quite challenging, but they prepare us well for the industry. Plus, the campus life is lively with events like Mood Indigo and Techfest that attract crowds from all over. I’ve also noticed that the placement opportunities are decent, with many companies coming for recruitment, so there’s a lot of potential for us after graduation.
For anyone aiming to crack the JEE, IIT Bombay is like a dream come true. Stepping into the campus for the first time feels surreal. If you've watched the movie Chhichhore, life here is quite similar to what you see there. Sounds cool, right? It really is. We have hostels like H4, H3, and guess what? I'm in H2. The rooms are tiny, so you rarely find students in their own spaces. They're usually hanging out in their friends' rooms, doing all sorts of fun stuff. One of my buddies hasn't even been to his room in weeks because he's always crashing at a friend's place.
There's total freedom with hostel timings; you can come and go anytime, and it's the same for girls. Our day usually starts in the afternoon. It might sound silly, but it's true. We hit the sack at 5 am and roll out of bed around 2 pm. The sports facilities are top-notch with three indoor basketball courts, two indoor volleyball courts, swimming pools, gymkhana ground, and a gym in each hostel.
Now, about academics, or "acads" as we call it. We're constantly battling with it. The smartest folks often doze off in class, regardless of what the professor is teaching. This means when exams roll around, we're pretty stressed. It's kind of amusing, really.
Then there are the events. Things like Mood Indigo, Techfest, E-Summit, they're the heart and soul of IIT. Mood Indigo and Techfest are the biggest fests in Asia, and the days spent there are unforgettable. You could say they're the best four days of college life. We get to meet amazing personalities like Dipika Padukone, Nitish Tiwari, KK, and Barkha Singh. The highlight of Mood Indigo is definitely the Pronites. These are unforgettable nights with fantastic bands like THE MAGIC band, DJ Snake, Lost Stories, and KK performing. The events are just fantastic, and everyone has a blast. Techfest is just as fun.
This is just a glimpse into life at IIT Bombay. To truly get it, you'd have to experience it yourself. So, why not drop by sometime? Apologies for any grammar slips. Thanks for reading.
A little while back, I was invited to IIT Bombay's E-Summit 2019 as a guest speaker, and I was genuinely amazed by the sheer magnitude of the event. For a moment, it felt like I had stepped into a Silicon Valley conference. Everywhere you turned, there were banners and sponsorships from all the big-name startups. The lineup of speakers was incredibly varied and impressive.
The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, rivaling any industry-organized startup event. The entire event was managed by students, and they did an outstanding job. I was really impressed by the level of exposure IIT Bombay students are getting right from their college days. Back when I was at IIT Kanpur, the word 'startup' was practically unheard of. Clearly, things have evolved since then.
I hope that all IITs and other tech institutes can offer their students the same kind of exposure and motivation. Hats off to IIT Bombay! Keep it up, and IIT Kanpur won't be far behind!
As an Aerospace Engineering student, I can say that life at IIT Bombay is intense but rewarding. The curriculum is structured to cover a lot of ground, from core subjects to electives. We have regular exams, which can be tough, but they keep us engaged. The professors are supportive and often conduct extra sessions to help us out. The internship opportunities are solid too; companies like Google and Microsoft visit for internships, and many students secure placements through them. The campus is beautiful, with lots of clubs and activities to get involved in. Overall, I think being at IIT Bombay is a fantastic experience!
