IIT Bombay BTech CSE syllabus overview (broad structure):

Year 1-2 (Foundation): Mathematics (Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics), Introduction to Computer Programming (Python/C), Digital Logic Design, Discrete Math, Computer Organization

Year 2-3 (Core CS): Data Structures & Algorithms, Design & Analysis of Algorithms, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Database Systems, Theory of Computation, Software Engineering, Logic Design

Year 3-4 (Advanced + Electives): Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Distributed Systems, Compiler Design, Cryptography, Advanced Algorithms — plus research projects and electives across departments

Final Year: BTP (B.Tech Project) — a research/implementation project. many IIT Bombay students use this for research papers or startup prototyping.

IIT Bombay CSE is one of India's most rigorous programs. the curriculum is heavily research-oriented with strong focus on theory + systems + applied areas. check cse.iitb.ac.in for the full current syllabus — it gets updated periodically.

IIT Bombay's BTech CSE syllabus is comprehensive and regularly updated — let me give you the actual structure rather than the vague "4 years of CS fundamentals" answer you usually see.

Curriculum overview (2024-25 batch, approximately 170-172 credits total):

  • Year 1 (Common): Engineering Mathematics (Calculus, Algebra, Probability), Physics, Chemistry, Introduction to Programming (Python), Engineering Graphics, HSS (Humanities) elective. No CS specialization yet.
  • Year 2: Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA), Computer Architecture, Discrete Maths, Logic Design, Programming Paradigms (functional programming, Haskell). This is where serious CS starts.
  • Year 3: Operating Systems, Database Management, Computer Networks, Theory of Computation (Automata), Software Engineering. Electives begin (~2 per semester).
  • Year 4: Primarily electives (6-8) + Major Project (compulsory, 2 semesters). Many choose AI/ML, Systems, Security, or Theory tracks.

Special features most answers don't mention:

  • DDP option: Dual Degree Program allows merging BTech + MTech in 5 years — competitive, worth considering if you want research.
  • Interdisciplinary: BTech CSE students can minor in Mathematics, Economics, or Statistics.
  • Current tech stack: C (systems), Python (ML/scripting), Java (some courses), Haskell (programming paradigms).

Check cse.iitb.ac.in/academics for the latest curriculum PDF — it's updated every year.
