How should I prepare for my interview in IISc Bangalore for the Integrated PhD course in Physics? I appeared in JAM 2016.

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : July 17th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

I was interviewed at IISc Bangalore for an integrated Ph.D. in Physics. Once you get an interview call, your JAM marks or rank do not matter.

You will give an interview to a panel of 5 to 6 professors, each one of whom will be an expert in their field. In the beginning,  you are asked about your UG studies and favorite topics in Physics. After this, you are asked questions and thoroughly examined.

Be very clear with the basics of Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Mathematical Physics. You can be asked anything from them. Truncated Harmonic Oscillator and Finite Square Well are important topics that are routinely asked during a Physics interview.

You should accept it if you do not know about a topic or did not study it. This is because the panelists easily assess what you know and what you do not know. If you do not know a topic and the panelists are in a good mood, you will be asked to get into the ‘let’s figure out’ mode, else, they will move on to another topic.

My interview experience at IISc Bangalore was quite good. I was not selected for the iPh.D. Physics program but the interview aided my growth and knowledge. I would recommend you enjoy the interview at IISc Bangalore and also give it well-prepared.

Which course is better: IIT, Madras M.S. by research or IIIT Hyderabad M.Tech in computer science?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The MS program is solely research-oriented and has minimal research work, while M.Tech is coursework based and has very less research angle. It's up to you to decide which aspect is more suitable for you and then only choose the program.

The subject or area of your work defines your MS program because the entire research will be based on that area only. Chronologically, an MS student has to go through these

  • Choose 5 courses related to your area of work and try to complete them within a year
  • Once you are done, start your research work and publish your paper
  • Sit for placements and get placed with a good package
  • Synopsis meeting after which you have to write your these
  • You are ready to leave IIT Madras

There is no fixed duration of the degree and one can even complete it in 2 years. It all depends on your capabilities and your area of research. Some even convert their MS degree into Ph.D. after the 1st year. The faculty pool is very cooperative and guides you continuously throughout your research work. Some important research topics include

  • Computer Architecture
  • Machine learning
  • NLP
  • Speech

As far as IIIT Hyderabad is concerned, its MTech program is coursework-based will little research in comparison to MS. So make a good choice of both institute and program based on your career prospects and preferences.

How is the placement at NMIMS Mumbai? I have heard that they show inflated figures in their website.

SM
Sakshi Mathur Posted On : February 28th, 2023
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (Graduated 2017)

Placements at NMIMS Mumbai are overall good and they are especially appealing in the finance domain. Like any other B school, NMIMS also projects an optimistic view of the salary figures that are sometimes slightly inflated but they are not factually wrong.

Connecting with past NMIMS students can get you a better idea of the actual figures. I also contacted my friend who was in the NMIMS 2016 batch. The average CTC around that time was 12 LPA which was pretty good considering the huge batch size of core MBA. The highest CTC that year stood at 32 LPA whereas the lowest stood at 8-8.5 LPA.

Sector-wise, the average CTC of Marketing was higher than the institute's average. In addition due to lower strength in Operations, they also fared well in placements. The students in Operations were able to get the desired job easily. The placements did not face any major issue except that the in the last round packages offered were as low as 8-10 LPA when around 100 students were left unplaced.

International roles were offered by Goldman Sachs, GE, Aliaxis group & few other companies. But the postings were mostly short-term in nature wherein you have to spend 3-3 months only.

Overall I think the placements are decent but might deteriorate with the increasing batch size and fees.

Can I do a BTech in computer science from IGNOU?

MS
Munta Shabir Posted On : November 3rd, 2022
B.Tech from APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University

In this era, if you want to engage in computer science, you don't need a degree. Unfortunately, the Indian system values degrees as well as relevant skills. All you need is a good computer, an internet connection, and a desire to learn. If you cannot afford four years or a large tuition fee for engineering, consider taking some related courses such as mathematics, statistics, or commerce.

You can learn skills on your own using free and paid online platforms, complete projects related to your skill set, and you'll be employable, possibly better than an engineering graduate.

Practicals (Lab sessions) are regarded as the backbone of engineering courses in other branches (though our colleges give much more importance to theory).

Many prestigious institutes outside of India are focusing on "outcome-based education." That is, simply having the certificate and having no idea what you did in college, or simply studying for the sake of passing the exam, isn't a big deal. You must be an authority in your field.

What documents are required at the time of counseling of the BHU UET?

NS
Nikhil Singh Posted On : January 16th, 2021
B.Com (Hons.) Chartered Accountancy, Banaras Hindu University (2020)

BHU has a computerized counseling process for admission to various courses. Which starts after the declaration of the result of BHU UET. The list of documents required at the time of counseling are –

  • High School (Xth) certificate and Mark sheet
  • Intermediate School Certificate (XIIth) and Mark sheet
  • Transfer certificate (from your last institution)
  • Migration certificate (from your last institution)
  • Certificate of Reservation (if any)
  • Admit card of the entrance examination (the sign of the invigilator should be there)
  • Call letter of counseling
  • Character certificate
  • Rank card

The counseling procedure involves a number of steps as well which are -

Fill up the Online Preference Entry –

  • The student has to fill up the online preference form available on the official page, without leaving any blank section. Failing to fill any section will display the disinterest of the student. The password to the portal will be made available to the students by the university through official email.
  • Register your course details, preferred seat number, preferred location, and counseling date on the form uploaded on your online entrance portal provided to you beforehand. The student has to mention his chosen Hons subject, his preferred course, the city in which he wants to study, and the seat type required for the counseling day.
  • The admission for the paid fee students will be done after the completion of the regular fee students admission. Their arrangement on the counseling day will be based on three factors- the order of merit, preferred course, and availability of seats.

Activity on the day of counseling-

  • If you want to change your preference, you can do it at this stage. Once the preference form is confirmed and signed, it can’t be changed.
  • In the case of provisionally admitted students, they can collect their Provisional Admission letter at 10 am from the assigned venue. They need to make the payment by 4 pm on the allotted counseling day, in accordance with their category of admission- regular free or paid fee student.
  • Online payment can be done through either a debit card or a credit card. Offline payment mode is also available, at the fee counter in your respective located center. It should be kept in mind that the payment has to be done before 4 pm of the counseling day, late payment is not acceptable by the university.

Activity on the next day of counseling –

  • The students have to submit the proof of the payment by 4 pm. Failure to do so might lose you the seat, the university will have the right to revoke the student's admission.
  • Candidates must have all the mentioned original documents with them. Provisional mark sheets issued by the controller of examinations will also stand valid. Although, you are expected to submit the original ones before the deadline as mentioned by the university.

For more queries, you can look up the official website or the student portal.

Which college should be preferred UPES Dehradun or PDPU Gandhinagar?

SV
Saira Verma Posted On : January 19th, 2022
B.Tech Petroleum Engineering, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar (2018)

According to the reviews online, both colleges have their own pros and cons, and here are some comparison points which might help you make an informed decision.

  • The location of both the colleges are good, be it Gandhinagar or Dehradun.
  • The UPES campus is much bigger compared to the PDPU campus. But both are well maintained and facilitated.
  • PDPU provides B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering while UPES provides the same in Applied Petroleum Engineering. The former is considered to be far better and more advantageous than the latter.
  • Curriculum of PDPU is very well prepared encompassing all major aspects. It has now been bifurcated into upstream and downstream.
  • Placements at PDPU are much better compared to UPES.
  • PDPU is visited by core companies like ONGC but UPES is mostly famous for its relevance among IT companies like Accenture, Wipro, etc.

Lastly, it can be seen that PDPU, even being a newer institution has grown a lot compared to other colleges. They are visited by core companies which hire students offering them a salary package of 14-15 LPA. So, it will be better if you go for PDPU as it will give you proper industrial exposure and opportunities.

How is IISER Bhopal?

SS
Sakshi Singh, Posted On : April 22nd, 2023
studies at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (2024)

IISER Bhopal is an excellent institution that provides a plethora of facilities and opportunities for students who have a keen interest in science.

The seniors at IISER Bhopal are generally cooperative, but it's important to note that instances of ragging have been reported. However, if you are firm in saying no, the seniors cannot do anything to you. It's also advisable to skip the official intro session, even if the faculties are present there, as it may not be very useful.

The academic atmosphere at IISER Bhopal is excellent, with a focus on science-based learning. The teachers here are knowledgeable about their subjects and teach well, with only a few exceptions.

The campus is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, which is available all over the campus, and LAN, except between 11 am to 2 pm when it is intentionally slowed down. The library is two-storied and has a good collection of books, although it could be improved. The computer center and library have excellent internet connectivity, and there are two brain spaces, which are rooms designed for studying, with soft mattresses. The library staff is dedicated and committed to their work, which is admirable.

The campus is well-maintained and clean, with lots of greenery, making it one of the best among IISERs.

For first-year students in natural sciences, there are compulsory courses, while in the second year, students have the option to choose pre-majors, and in the third year, they choose their major based on their CPI. It's important to keep in mind that there is a CPI cutoff for choosing majors.

There are several clubs at IISER Bhopal, providing students with ample opportunities to explore their interests and engage in extracurricular activities. The institution also offers good opportunities for sports, with separate grounds for table tennis, badminton, tennis, cricket, athletics, football, basketball, and kabaddi.

Overall, IISER Bhopal is an excellent institution for science-loving students. It's advisable to get out of your shell, explore, and make friends, keeping in mind that your CPI matters.
