Why do people prefer IIM Calcutta over IIM Ahmedabad for finance-related jobs??
The claim that IIM Calcutta is India's finance campus, is overstated. Yes, C has a slightly higher number of finance recruiters, but the majority of the top recruiters also attend IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore. The difference is in tier 2 and 3 finance companies, which Ahmedabad makes up for with good FMCG and consulting roles.
In general, placement processes in Calcutta are disorganized when compared to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and even FMS. Processes in Calcutta are woefully out of date, as evidenced by the recent dissent against place reps and the subsequent motion of no confidence.
It has been noticed that people only select IIM Calcutta over IIM Ahmedabad if they are having problems with location and not because they believe Calcutta to be superior to Ahmedabad.
How good is NIT Patna campus?
NIT Patna has a very small campus that spreads across 35 acres. The campus is undergoing major renovations and construction so you can expect a better-facilitated campus in the future.
One of my friends was very disappointed when he got into NIT Patna mainly because of its infrastructure. But soon he made friends and started seeing the positive side of the institute. He realized that infrastructure does not matter much, the crowd, faculty, and ambiance is what make or break a college. The institute is home to some of the most talented individuals in the country.
So, don’t judge a college merely on the basis of its infrastructure and campus size. There is more than the eyes can see!
Which is the best medical college in northeast India? Is Neigrihms, Shillong, or a central medical institute better than GMC Guwahati?
Comparably NEIGRIHMS is better. However, both of these two institutes have their advantages.
NEIGRIHMS:
- It has a virtual dissection table. Other than one or two medical colleges, you can’t find this facility anywhere in India.
- As their student intake is not high, the student-teacher ratio is better. You will get more personal attention from teachers.
- The campus is clean and quite beautiful.
- The internship salary is more.
GMC:
- It has more faculty.
- You will have access to PG coaching centers like Dams. As it is situated near the college.
- It also offers better exposure.
NEIGRIHMS has improved a lot in a very short time. The healthcare quality offered on campus can’t be compared to anywhere else.
How good is NIT Patna for CSE? Did anyone get a seat in NIT Patna?
One of my friends got a seat in NIT Patna and shared the experience of his first year spent there
- Campus : The NIT Patna campus is tiny around 45 acres only. However, the campus has all basic facilities like a canteen, Nescafe spot, playground, basketball court, and an ATM.
- Academics : The academic ambiance is not very rigorous as all the students are busy with different activities like coding, playing games, gym and sports, preparations for competitive exams, etc As a result studies are given the least preference here.
- Faculty : The professors aren't interested in teaching at all and no kind of research work is encouraged by them.
- Competitive exams: NIT Patna has a culture that promotes the preparation of Civil services exams and other competitive exams.
- Placements : NIT Patna Placements 2023 is in progress. Till now, 120+ recruiters participated in the placement drive & placed 609 students. NIT Patna's highest package stood at INR 52 LPA whereas NIT Patna's average package stood at INR 14 LPA. Some of the participating top recruiters included ONGC, Bharat Electronics, Google, etc.
- Campus life: NIT Patna’s annual techno-cultural fests Corona and Melange are held at a decent level. The institute has provisions for all kinds of indoor and outdoor sports.
- Hostels: Boys are allotted double occupancy rooms while girls are offered quad sharing is there. The girl's hostel is within the campus and the boys' hostel is at 2 2-minute walking distance.
Overall, NIT Patna offers an average campus life and opportunities.
Why don't companies like BCG, McKinsey and JP Morgan come to IIT Roorkee for placements while they hire students from other IITs?
By BCGL MCminsey and JP Morgan, you are referring to Consulting and Finance companies basically.
Consulting: Consulting giants like BCG and McKinsey usually visit only the top institutes and choose only the cream candidates. This is because of the nature of the profession that requires only the best candidate. These candidates should have had an excellent rank which is possible only in the top IITs like Bombay and Delhi. The peer quality is much better at these institutes with some who have won International Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Astronomy Olympiads, played sports at the National level, and won quizzes & debating events nationally.
Finance: These companies look for an extensive knowledge base in Finance and excellent Mathematical aptitude. These finance enthusiasts are rarely there in Roorkee owing to its laid-back attitude. Not many are able to crack CFA/FRM while there are many who have at IIT KGP. The lack of enthusiasm and preparation on the part of the students has resulted in top finance companies like JP Morgan, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, etc.
Some other major reasons why these companies don’t visit Roorkee for placements are
- Students at IIT Roorkee are not well prepared in advance for placements. They have no idea regarding case studies and guesstimates. Rarely does anyone prepare for the GD round
- The resume preparation is not given due importance and students take this lightly
- The company’s PPT is given very less enthusiasm
- The seniors don’t provide enough assistance and overall the culture at IIT Roorkee is very laid back.
Given the opportunity, some might clear the interview of these big firms but because of the overall preparation of the branch, all the students are deprived of this opportunity.
Considering that my profile is: 10th- 89.2 12th- 74.2 Grad. (Engg)- 8.5 PG- 8.0, which one is better: the NMIMS Mumbai, the IIM Rohtak, the IIM Raipur, the IIM Ranchi, the IIM Trichy, the IIM Udaipur
The aspects of judging a college’s worth depend on the following factors
- legacy
- alumni experience
- perception among peers
- quality of students
- faculty
- institute culture
- events and activities
- pedagogy
- Summer and final placement opportunities
NMIMS renders you short-term advantages but IIMs offer many long term advantages. Even the faculty is better at IIMs than at NMIMS. But being a new institute, it lacks an alumni base. Any far-sighted person can definitely say that your IIM tag will help you in the long run.
Now based on your list, the order is
IIM Udaipur>IIM Ranchi>IIM Trichy>IIM Rohtak> IIM Raipur>IIM Kashipur
While applying to the US for an MS, are NITs (Surathkal, Trichy, Warangal) considered the same level as the new IITs?
Top NITs like Surathkal, Trichy, and Warangal are considered close to if not at par with old IITs and definitely better than some new IITs.
Unless you are from the top IITs, admission to foreign universities for an MS does not depend on the college you are from. Many students from top IITs go to foreign universities every year. For non-IITians what matters is the project, internships, UG research quality, and extracurriculars. In fact, the sole reason IITians make it to top foreign universities is their strong determination and grasp of these aspects. Yes, the IIT alumni network does help you in the research internship but ultimately it’s your efforts that matter.
So even if you are not an IITian, keep working hard and you are likely to get admission to top foreign universities.
Which should I join, IIM Trichy/IIM Udaipur?
You should join IIM Trichy. It is better, especially for Finance specialization. Their finance faculty is among the best in the country. It has CFA association. Here are the highlights of IIM Trichy placements 2022.

Which college is better, Dyal Singh or Deshbandhu?

Easwari Engineering College and SRM University are both well-known colleges of engineering in Chennai. Of the two, SRM University has more number of campuses spread across the country, hence one might expect a cosmopolitan crowd at the institute. SRM is a deemed university whereas Easwari Engineering College is affiliated to Anna University in Tamil Nadu.
