FMS Delhi is one of the oldest MBA colleges and attracts highly qualified individuals every year. Its rankings and placement statistics are living proof of its legacy and excellence. At no single aspect does JBIMS give an edge to FMS. Owing to its outstanding performance in delivering management talent every year, it attracts top firms for recruitment and the best candidates. The CAT cutoff gives an edge to the top IIMs and thereby causing great competition. The absence of a state/regional quota also ensures that students don’t have to compromise on quality and merit. Let’s discuss some more points where FMS gives an edge to JBIMS thereby proving its worth.
All these features combined make FMS one of the best schools and definitely a better choice than JBIMS.
FMS is known largely for its Management and Consulting placements rather than Finance placements. Let’s have a look at the sector-wise placement statistics of FMS.
Domains |
Campus Offers |
Management and Consulting |
76 |
E-Com/ IT/ Operations |
61 |
Finance |
30 |
S&M |
25 |
From the above stats we can say that the highest placements were offered to the Management and Consulting domains. The Marketing placements accounted for 39%, Consulting and Management for 17%, IT/Ops for 28%, and Finance for 16%. Finance received almost half of what Management and Consulting placement offers. The top recruiters that came from the Finance sectors are as follows
So I don’t think FMS Delhi is good for Finance.
The claim that IIM Calcutta is India's finance campus, is overstated. Yes, C has a slightly higher number of finance recruiters, but the majority of the top recruiters also attend IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore. The difference is in tier 2 and 3 finance companies, which Ahmedabad makes up for with good FMCG and consulting roles.
In general, placement processes in Calcutta are disorganized when compared to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and even FMS. Processes in Calcutta are woefully out of date, as evidenced by the recent dissent against place reps and the subsequent motion of no confidence.
It has been noticed that people only select IIM Calcutta over IIM Ahmedabad if they are having problems with location and not because they believe Calcutta to be superior to Ahmedabad.
NMIMS Mumbai is comparably better for Finance specialization. It is a well-recognized name in the Finance sector. Due to the locational advantage, it’s easier to get good exposure and networking opportunities. All big banks and sought-after finance companies visit NMIMS Mumbai placement drive. Even consulting companies offer job roles in the BFSI domain to Finance students. Despite the huge batch size, you can expect good placement opportunities. During NMIMS Mumbai placements 2022, the highest salary package offered in the Finance domain was INR 32 LPA.
FMS Delhi is largely called the Marketing Campus of India owing to its excellent Marketing specialization. But this does not mean that its Finance department is poorly specialized. FMS provides great opportunities to its Finance students as well.
Faculty
The finance faculty conducts such amazing classes that even non-finance students are able to grasp the concepts easily. The pedagogy includes class discussions and case studies.
Finance Society of FMS Delhi: The Finance Society of FMS Delhi or FinSoc is an active body available 24/7 to clear all your doubts, aid you in preparing for placements, and exams and even help you perform in Corporate Competitions.
Alpha Investment and Research Club: This cell aims at converting your theoretical knowledge into practical lessons. This practical approach is possible through quality research, and knowledgeable sessions that help in understanding the nuances of investing and trading.
Placements
This year the finance domain received 30 placement offers and 11 pre-placement offers. The roles offered included Front End Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, Wealth Management, etc.
The major recruiters that came from the finance sector included Bharti Enterprises, ICICI Bank, HCL, HSBC, Axis Bank, and Crisil.
So FMS is not just a marketing campus but also specializes in Finance.
Considering the job profiles offered, ROI, and placements, DFS DU will be a better option for Finance. It is a well-known name in the Finance industry. DFS has been providing proficient and dedicated Finance professionals to the industry for the last three decades.
It is not a residential program. You will get ample time to take part in extracurricular and other activities. DFS has many clubs and committees that you can take part in.
Major recruiters from the finance sector such as Arcesium and DE Shaw take part in the campus placements. According to the recent highlights of DFS Delhi placements, the highest CTC offered for Finance job roles is around INR 26 LPA.
If you have a non-finance background, it is recommended that you begin your preparation for the JBIMS MSc finance interview at least 4-5 months prior to your interview for the MSc Finance course. You must be sure about your interest in finance, as M.Sc Finance is a very core course. If you have a finance background, you are expected to have a deeper understanding of the points mentioned below. Along with knowing the "whats", you must also know the "whys". In terms of preparation, it is important for you to:
By being thorough with all of these above-mentioned points, you will be well-prepared for the MSc Finance interview.
Some Chartered Accountants or commerce graduates may have struggled with final courses at IIM Ahmedabad, possibly because the courses are far too advanced and specialized (such as financial engineering subjects), or because IIM A likes to surprise students in a variety of ways.
However, this is a rare case. This does not happen very often.
Since you are curious about finance only, I will try to answer your question based on the Finance domain only. To elaborate let’s consider the following merits and demerits
Merits
Demerits:
All in all I think IIM Ranchi is a decent choice for Finance and in the years to come will have improved a lot.
In choosing your B-school, the primary factors that you should consider are, the specialization you want to opt for and the ROI you are expecting. In your case, you want to go for Finance. The list of preferred B Schools you mentioned has similar fees and placements so I will be answering solely based on specialization.
Finance: IMI Delhi is the best choice of all the options when it comes to Finance. A premium quality crowd opts for Finance at IMI Delhi and the main reason is the customized MBA program in Finance. Many companies of the Finance sector visit the campus for placements. Finance students also avail the best opportunities and guidance and have a higher level of security than Marketing students.
However, in case you have more than 2-3 years of work experience, IMI Delhi is not a suitable option. Although you may stand out among your batchmates, the companies visiting the campus are not aware of this and offer roles suitable for less experienced students only. So your work experience may not be credited here.
The general preference order should be: IMI D>XIMB>IMT G
