TNAU restores 5% Quota for Vocational Stream Students at Private TNAU Affiliated Colleges

After the Madras High Court delivered a ruling, the decision to restore the 5% quota in private institutions was made. The decision came when S Moorthy, the Coordinator of the Forum of Education Development in Tamil Nadu, went to court in 2019 after a PIL was filed on his son's behalf.

Until 2019, TNAU offered a 5% quota for vocational students at government and private institutions who studied agriculture as a core subject. However, the quota in private colleges was eventually removed.

Only a few candidates were able to enrol in BSc programmes of TNAU with Agriculture and Horticulture as their primary streams as a result of this withdrawal. According to reports, there were 98 places available in 18 government institutions under the 5% quota.

However, as a result of the restoration, more than 100 seats in the vocational stream will be open.

TNAU officials said, "Now 198 seats are available for vocational stream students. Online counselling was conducted for 150 students on Thursday, February 24, 2022. 110 students have already been shortlisted".

The Madras High Court found in 2019 that the 5% quota must be implemented across Tamil Nadu to both constituent and affiliated private colleges. The court also proposed that students in the vocational stream be allowed to enrol in both the general and reservation categories, rather than being limited to the 5% restriction.
