PGIMER Chandigarh Doubles Sponsored Medical Seat Quota for MD, MS, and DM Courses

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) / PGI Chandigarh has approved a proposal for a substantial increase in the number of sponsored seats available for MD, MS, and DM courses. This decision effectively doubles the sponsored seat quota, raising it from 45 to 88.

Sponsored candidates primarily comprise government employees, including defense personnel, who are required to have a minimum of three years of service. These candidates can apply for admission to their desired medical courses after obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from their parent department.

During their academic pursuit, their department sponsors their salary. This decision holds particular significance for defense personnel who aspire to attain super-specialty qualifications.

This significant decision took center stage during the governing body and institute body meetings of PGIMER, Chandigarh. These meetings, chaired by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi on September 7, 2023, highlighted the necessity for this enhancement.

Discussing the implications of this development, Dr. Vivek Lal, the Director of PGIMER, explained that previously, the defense personnel faced difficulties in gaining admission to MD and DM courses due to limited seat availability.

However, with the recent increase in the reservation from 33% to 50%, the seat count has risen from 45 to 88. Importantly, this expansion has been accomplished without negatively affecting other categories, he added.

Furthermore, the minutes from the meeting, which were made public on the following Friday, affirmed the approval of several significant proposals. In addition to the expansion of sponsored seats, the advancement of various faculty members and the establishment of new positions were also given the green signal.

Moreover, the PGIMER has obtained approval for an MBBS program and the construction of a cutting-edge 150-bed critical care facility at its satellite center in Sarangpur. This establishment will include a trauma center and an outpatient department (OPD), thus significantly augmenting healthcare services in the region.

Additionally, PGIMER has been assigned the responsibility of drafting a comprehensive project report (DPR) for the planned college campus.

In an important development earlier this year, the standing finance committee granted initial approval to initiate the MBBS course. The college is expected to begin its operations by 2025 after obtaining the necessary approvals from the Medical Council.
