During the NEET UG Re-test Hearing on July 23, 2024, an expert panel from IIT-Delhi informed the Supreme Court that ‘question no. 29’ of the Physics section of the NEET-UG 2024 exam had only one correct answer and not two.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has accepted and recognised IIT Delhi's conclusion regarding the disputed physics question, emphasising that there is only one correct answer. During the NEET UG Re-test Hearing on July 23, 2024, an expert panel from IIT-Delhi informed the Supreme Court that ‘question no. 29’ of the Physics section of the NEET-UG 2024 exam had only one correct answer and not two.
Taking note of this, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud directed the NTA to revise the results.
This means that the scores of over four lakh students who selected the wrong option will be reduced by five marks i.e; four marks for the incorrect answers and one mark for negative marks. This change is expected to significantly alter the students' rankings.
Simultaneously, this also means that as many as 44 out of 61 students who scored a perfect 720/720 will lose the four marks, leaving only 17 students to share AIR (all-India rank) 1.
The NTA had initially treated two options for the question as correct answers after students pointed out that one option was correct according to the old NCERT textbook, while the other was correct according to the new textbook.
Now, only those students, whose answers match the one given by IIT-Delhi, will get four marks for the question and over four lakh student, who answered the other option as per the old NCERT textbook, will lose five marks instead.
The Chief Justice of India stated, "Considering the expert assessment conducted by the team from IIT Delhi, we have full confidence in the accuracy of the identified option. Options 2 and 4 are mutually exclusive and cannot be correct simultaneously. We endorse the IIT Delhi report, and as a result, the NTA is to revise the NEET UG results by confirming that option 4 is the only correct answer to the question. We have opted not to specify the question number, as it may differ based on the exam procedure, in order to maintain the integrity of the process."
During the hearing, the CJI questioned the timeline of the inaccuracies in the textbook used for the exam. The Solicitor General (SG) confirmed that the incorrect answer remained in the textbook until 2021.
What was the Controversial Question in Physics Paper?
The contentious question was: "Given below are two statements: Statement I: Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain equal number of positive and negative charges. Statement II: Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
(1) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
(2) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
(3) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
(4) Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect."
