IIT Mandi Honored with Green University Award at COP 28 UAE

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi was recently honored with the prestigious Green University Award by Green Mentors, a non-profit organization in the United States with official advisory status from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). 

The recognition took place at COP 28 in the UAE. This award is a testament to IIT Mandi's dedication to sustainable practices and its holistic efforts in promoting environmental initiatives. According to the official statement, IIT Mandi has been awarded for its “comprehensive commitment to sustainable practices and its holistic approach towards environmental initiatives”.

Director of IIT Mandi, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, expressed his gratitude, stating, "This achievement is the result of unwavering efforts, commitment, and groundwork carried out by the faculty, staff, and student community through various activities."

He expressed the institute's aim of promoting awareness among students and campus residents about ecological concerns, safeguarding nature, and resource preservation.

“IIT Mandi is actively engaged in conducting Environmental Audits, implementing Green Audits, and promoting vegetarian food options on campus. This involves evaluating the campus's environmental impact and assessing the net carbon footprint of various units within the institution,” the director said.

Prof. Behera highlighted, "Our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve zero carbon emissions within the next 10 years. These green initiatives aim not only to assess our environmental impact but also instill environmental consciousness among our campus community."

The Green University Award is a prestigious recognition that acknowledges IIT Mandi for its dedication to establishing an environmentally conscious campus. It underscores the institute's persistent diligence and devotion to constructing a sustainable world.

To be designated at the prestigious CoP 28 is a gratifying milestone that highlights the united effort of the entire institutional community to embrace a sustainable future. The institution aims to create a model framework for an eco-conscious campus and explore revenue generation through carbon trading, the institute said. “At the global level, this recognition was attributed to the prestigious CoP 28 platform. The award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Institute community,” it added.
