New Delhi: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has awarded INR 3.65 crore for tribal welfare to GITAM's (Deemed to be University) Science, Technology, and Innovation Hubs (GITAM STI Hubs). To create science and technology clusters in Andhra Pradesh, the tribal welfare fund has been awarded.

According to a release from GITAM Visakhapatnam, the deemed institution is leading the way in a transformative strategy to improve the socioeconomic standing of the local Scheduled Tribe (ST) population in a few areas in Andhra Pradesh.

Researchers at the Science, Technology, and Innovation Hub of the GITAM (Deemed to be University) and Associate Professor Dr. I. Sarat Babu, the project's principal investigator from the Department of Biotechnology, have received funding totaling INR. 3.65 Crore Up to four GITAM STI Hubs.

According to a GITAM statement, these hubs have been established with the goal of fusing volunteer work and academic research, creating a platform that supports entrepreneurship and empowers tribal youth, and ultimately resulting in a discernible improvement in their general quality of life.

According to a GITAM statement, the overall objective of the STI Hub is to enhance the standard of living for tiny and underserved tribal communities and aid in skill development through the establishment of two FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations) and 20 SHGs (Self Help Groups), each of which will serve 1,000 beneficiaries.

The STI Hubs also seek to foster social enterprises and value chains through science and technology interventions. The activity will contribute to the development of the chosen recipients' human and physical resources as well as their health and nutritional status.

The Science for Equity Empowerment and Development (SEED) Division will create four business divisions. Each of these units will start new businesses, such as niger seed oil mills, beekeeping operations, solar-powered cold storage facilities, and vegetable processing facilities for produce like broccoli, cucumber, and ginger.
