Dr. BN Gangadhar, with over 30 years of expertise in psychiatry, has taken on the role of Chairman of the National Medical Commission after serving as the Director of NIMHANS.

New Delhi: The ex-Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) has assumed the role of Chairman of the National Medical Commission.
NIMHANS expressed its joy by congratulating on the social media by tweeting, "NIMHANS warmly congratulates Dr. BN Gangadhar, our former Director, on his new position as Chairman of the National Medical Commission @NMC_IND. With over 30 years of experience in psychiatry, his outstanding contributions to the field are unparalleled."
As the President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) within the NMC, Dr. BN Gangadhar has assumed the role previously held by Suresh Sharma, whose tenure recently concluded.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appointed Dr. Gangadhar as the acting chairman of NMC for an interim period of three months or until a permanent chairman is appointed. Dr. Gangadhar officially assumed this role on September 25, 2023.
According to an official letter from the Ministry of Health, after careful consideration and approval from the appropriate authority, it was determined that Dr. B. N. Gangadhar, currently serving as the President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board, will assume the Officiating Charge for the position of Chairman of NMC starting from September 25, 2023.
This assignment will continue until a permanent appointment is made or for a maximum duration of three months, whichever occurs earlier, subject to further orders.
About B N Gangadhar, the Former NIMHANS Director
Since January 2016, he has held the position of Director and Professor of Psychiatry at NIMHANS. His educational journey includes completing his MBBS in 1978 at Bangalore Medical College, earning an MD in Psychiatry in 1981 at NIMHANS, and obtaining a DSc (Doctor of Science) from SVYASA University in 2012 for his research on Yoga and Mental Health.
Additionally, he has taken on various roles such as Honorary Dean of Life Sciences at SVYASA Yoga University since 2013, Adjunct faculty member specializing in Consciousness at the National Institute of Advanced Studies since 2014, and serving as the President of the Indian Psychiatric Society, Karnataka Chapter, during 2012–13.
Furthermore, he has a history of international involvement, having been a Visiting Fellow (IBRO) in Vienna, Austria, from 1987 to 1988 and a Consultant to WHO for the inspection of Tsunami relief projects in 2008. Currently, he serves on expert committees for DST and the national AYUSH committee for integrative medicine. Among his notable achievements, Dr. B N Gangadhar has received the prestigious Sir CV Raman Award and Doctors Day Award from the Government of Karnataka.
He has also been honored with over 25 awards, both individually and in collaboration with other primary recipients, and was elected as a Fellow in 2019.
NIMHANS, or the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, serves as a diverse institution dedicated to patient care and the academic exploration of mental health and neurosciences.
