Dr. Bhavna Gupta Saraf is the HOD of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry at Sudha Rustagi College of Dental Sciences and Research. She is a gold medalist in B.D.S and M.D.S (Gold Medalist). She has a professional membership of ISPPD, IDA. She holds a total experience of 13 years and her research interest includes Preventive Pediatric Dentistry and Cariology. She has held more than 20 International and National publications in High Impact Journals.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and how do students get practical experience from studying the subject?

We try to give a practical approach to the subject by guiding the students in the clinics. They get exposure to the various clinical procedures which are done in pediatric dentistry on typhoidons, and extracted teeth. They also get to handle the patients under the clinical teacher's guidance. So that is how they can enhance their practical approach towards the subject.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students that help them gain the necessary skills?

We teach the students all the work that is supposed to be taught in pediatric dentistry. They learn all kinds of restoration pulp, therapies pulp, therapies stainless steel crowns and other things. Also, we teach them appropriate behavior management so that they can manage the pediatric patient later on in their clinical practice.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

We help our students to cope with the competition in the outside world by treating them with ethical practices. Ethical clinical teaching is what we emphasize here. We teach them good work, we teach them how to handle pediatric patients so that they will be able to face the competition further outside the world without any problems.

What do you see as the department’s/ college’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced? 

So our department strength, I must say, is the reputed faculty we have in pediatric dentistry. We are five faculties and we belong to very prestigious colleges around India. We have diverse knowledge which we condense to give to the postgraduate students by working as a team and the college's strength, I must say, is the great patient output and the infrastructure we have which is there. And this can further be enhanced later on by a lot of camps and other motivational practices. 

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

I would suggest to the various students as a clinical practitioner myself to always maintain an ethical practice and be very courteous to their patients and even their teachers. Be regular and keep consistent in learning and keep updating yourself so that you can have a wonderful and prosperous career ahead.
