Dr. D. V. Naik is the Principal at Dr. M.K. Umathe Arts and Commerce College. He did a Ph.D. in 2007 from RTM Nagpur University. His area of interest is Indian English Literature. He has around 24 years of teaching experience. He attended various International, National, and State Conferences, Workshops, and Seminars. He has worked as a member of R.R.C. at R.T.M. You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education society?

One of the key factors that keeps me connected with the education society is the belief that education is a powerful tool for creating positive change in people’s lives. Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand how education can empower individuals, build communities, and drive economic growth. This has inspired me to stay involved with education institutions and networks and to continue working towards improving access, quality, and equity in education. Additionally, I find it gratifying to be able to share my knowledge and experience with others in the field, as well as learn from their perspectives and insights. Finally, I am driven by a desire to contribute to larger societal goals, such as fostering innovation, promoting social justice, and advancing human rights, all of which are closely tied to education.


Being the Principal of Dr. M. K. Umathe College, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

My philosophy of leadership is centered on the idea of empowering and supporting others to achieve their full potential. As the Principal of Dr. M. K. Umathe College, I believe it is my responsibility to create an environment that fosters learning, growth, and collaboration. This means building strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members, and involving them in decision-making processes that impact their work and lives. My leadership style could be described as participative or democratic. I value input and feedback from others and believe that the best solutions often emerge through collaboration and collective effort. I encourage open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn from one another. At the same time, I also recognize the need for accountability and set clear expectations and goals that align with institutional priorities and standards. Overall, my leadership approach is based on the belief that the success of an educational institution is dependent on the collective contributions of its members and that by working together, we can achieve our vision of being a premier institution of higher learning.


How does the curriculum of Dr. M. K. Umathe College under R. T. M. Nagpur University ensure the best practice of industry?

Dr. M. K. Umathe College is affiliated to R. T. M. Nagpur University and our curriculum is designed by the University itself. However, RTM Nagpur University frequently collaborates with industry partners to develop and adapt their curricula to meet the changing needs of different sectors. This could include incorporating the latest technologies, teaching methods, and industry practices into coursework and field experiences. In addition, universities often invite industry experts as guest speakers, participate in joint research projects, and offer internships or co-op opportunities to their students in partnership with relevant organizations. How would you define your connection with students and faculty in the institute?

“The environment we provide is open and transparent, allowing everyone to explore and grow”. I talk to students occasionally, offer encouragement, and work to help them with any issues they may be having. Some kids require therapy for both academic issues and personal issues. I keep a friendly relationship with the faculty. I aim to speak with the staff common room at least once a week about matters pertaining to the college, courses, admissions, students’ conduct, timetable, etc. Every day, opinions, experiences, and even personal issues are shared on a personal level.


What do you think are your roles and responsibilities as a Principal of the college?

I, Dr. D. V. Naik as a principal of Dr. M. K. Umathe College have personal opinions or roles and responsibilities. My roles and responsibilities to the college include providing leadership, strategic planning, ensuring academic excellence, maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders, managing resources effectively, promoting diversity and inclusivity, enforcing policies and regulations, fostering professional development, and representing the college at the community and national level. The Principal is accountable for the overall success of the college, the academic growth of students, the well-being of faculty and staff, and ensuring the college’s financial sustainability.


What do you think should be the college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

The college’s top priority over the next 10 years would be to provide high-quality education, infrastructure, and facilities to our students. The college would focus on enhancing its curriculum and teaching methods to prepare students for the job market or further academic pursuits. It will also prioritize investing in updating its technology facilities, building new academic and residential buildings, providing scholarships and financial assistance to the students, and cultivating a diverse and inclusive learning environment. It Would also continually improve its educational programs and facilities to ensure students receive the best education possible. Besides this, promoting and expanding community service opportunities can also enhance the college’s reputation as a socially responsible institution. Additionally, the college would prioritize establishing partnerships with local and international institutions to broaden students’ research opportunities and enrich their academic experiences.


What are some of the biggest challenges you see for higher education in general and R. T. M. Nagpur University and Dr. M. K. Umathe College?

In my opinion, some of the challenges in higher education are inadequate funding, lack of access to educational resources, outdated teaching methods, and rising tuition fees. As for R.T.M. Nagpur University and Dr. M. K. Umathe College, specific challenges may include low student enrollment, limited career opportunities for graduates, outdated curricula, and issues with infrastructure and facilities.
