Prof. (Dr.) Mohanan M has been working as the Principal and Hospital Superintendent at Major S.D. Singh Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital, Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. He has done BAMS and M.D. (Bhaishajya Kalpana) from SDM College of Ayurveda - Udupi Karnataka as part of his education. He is a reputed professor, administrator and practitioner in the field of Ayurveda with work experience of more than 15 Years including 11 years in the teaching sector. Throughout his career, he has attended several National and International conferences and workshops and has also successfully organized seminars, and workshops training programs. In addition to all this, punctuality, helping attitude and creativity are his key skills.

How Major SD Singh was founded and what key factors keep you connected with the education sector?

I started my journey in 1997 when I realized the importance of education in the Hospitality sector as there was no college for AMCH in our region. Then in 2003, we established this institution cum hospital and started offering courses like BAMS and Pharmacy to students from 2012 onwards. And in 2014, we added Polytechnic courses to our curriculum. 

Also, if I talk about the major factor which has helped me stay associated with the dynamic and challenging world of education, it's definitely the satisfaction I receive when I see my students getting employed and generating employment for others as well.

Being Principal and Hospital Superintendent of Major S.D. Singh, what is your philosophy of leadership? 

Our institution and hospital has a total of 150 staff members and I treat everyone of them as my family members. And my leadership philosophy revolves around taking everyone together and involving each stakeholder in decision-making processes. Also, Major SD Singh is a renowned institute that offers finest quality Ayurveda education, skills and values to students with a scientific approach. Because, as an effective leader I usually believe in empowering followers through increased responsibilities and also that everyone should have equal say within the team.

Apart from this, regular skills upgradation of faculty remains our top priority and if needed we also arrange events such as guest lectures and industry-interaction sessions with experts of Ayurveda and other science to widen their knowledge and thoughts.

How do you strategize the key programs for the administration and marketing of your college?

For the purpose of enhancing our reach among our future potential students and letting them know about our achievements and strengths, we run SMS campaigns, give advertisements in newspapers and Google ads and also use posters and banners. In addition to this, we have a very fast and technologically advanced website followed by a strong presence on social media. 

And when it comes to Administration of our college, making my department best in terms of criteria and facilities remains my top priority. And I also need to manage co-curricular activities of our institution and data for all the students and what they are learning in a particular subject. 

In your opinion, how can we improve our Indian education system and make it more relevant?

I strongly believe that while upgrading our education system, our focus should be on adopting best International standards and practices on the earliest basis. So, first and foremost, we can implement this by regular revision and update of college curriculum and syllabus of each subject in accordance with international norms. Apart from this, adoption of open book examination both in online and offline modes can be a good option. Talking about my own experience, so I have successfully implemented these systems in my professional career of over 20 years.

How does the curriculum of your institution ensure the best practices of the industry?

Our institution provides quality education to young and ambitious students and we also have best, highly educated and experienced faculty members and facilities for their all around growth and development. Because the mission of Major SD Singh is that when students complete their respective courses from our college, they should be fully ready to face and solve outside world challenges.

Hence we also give them the best possible industrial exposure and opportunities to learn new things on a regular basis. Guest lectures are conducted too from time to time in association with experts wherein we invite them to have an interactive session with students and educate tme about real-time hurdles they may face in the marketplace. Last but not the least, internships are an integral part of our college curriculum which we renew as and when needed after consultation with industry experts and eminent academicians.

How is your institution more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

Our college has a diverse category of students from all over the region of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and we treat each of them equally by providing the same education, opportunities and challenges in order to make them future ready. And in addition to highly educated and experienced faculty, we have good infrastructure, a Hospital and Panchakarma Center for them. Also, as we believe that education itself is not enough for students' complete growth, hence various kinds of extracurricular activities are organized to give each of them the same stage to showcase their unique talents and learn something new in return.

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

I would like to advise my dear students to stay dedicated and focused towards their life goals. And if you have the passion, hunger for a good life and future, our Major SD Singh would be a perfect place for you to pursue your dreams as we not only offer the best quality education but also are open to all kinds of suggestions coming from our students, teachers, and parents to keep improving our institutions. 

What do you think should be the college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

We are about to start a hospital to serve the public of Farrukhabad. And in upcoming years, our focus would be on offering Nursing and other Medical courses to students.
