Dr. Paramita Ray is an Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of the BCA program at DAITM. Besides a B.Sc. in Chemistry, she also holds an MCA, M.Tech, and a PhD degree in IT. Dr. Ray’s areas of specialisation are Database Management System, Data Mining, Graphics, Operating System.

How does the curriculum of DAITM College ensure the best practice of industry? 

Prioritising curriculum alignment with industry best practices is a top priority for DAITM College. Our goal is to educate students about the demands of the working world. The college accomplishes this in numerous ways. We have adopted an industry-integrated curriculum design where the latest changes in the industry are included in the curriculum. We provide practical learning opportunities through case studies and internships. DAITM College also offers various professional certification programs in collaboration with industry bodies and organizations. In addition to technical skills, DAITM College emphasizes the development of soft skills and professional competencies essential for success in the workplace. 

What is the placement statistics of your BCA Dept? 

Our placements department has put in a lot of work for the development of our students. It has resulted in almost 80% to 90% of our BCA students getting placements in reputed companies, in the past year.

Till date, what has been your average package offered to the student? Please tell us about the highest package offered to the student as well. 

Our latest placement packages are a testament to our college’s efforts and the skills our students possess. The average package secured by our students was INR 3.5 to INR 4 LPA among the BCA students.

With the competition so high, how do you guide your students to survive in such a competitive scenario?

Guiding students to grow and prosper in a highly competitive academic and professional environment necessitates a multifaceted strategy that emphasizes both academic performance and personal development. We help students set clear, achievable goals for their academic and professional pursuits by breaking down long-term goals into smaller, actionable steps, and encourage regular reflection and adjustment of goals based on progress and feedback. Our teachers equip students with critical thinking skills that enable them to analyze information, solve problems, make informed decisions, question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and consider multiple perspectives. We also encourage continuous learning, and skill development while also promoting self-care and well-being.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented? 

There are various approaches that we use to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications. We try to bring a practical approach to subjects and make our students industry-oriented by giving them hands-on skills. To achieve this we have numerous industry partnerships and collaborations which enable us to provide professional certifications and training. We also provide simulations and lab exercises to the students besides the regular course content.

What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

Uplifting the quality of education in any department can be a challenging but rewarding endeavour. Some common challenges that we face in this pursuit are recruiting, retaining, and developing qualified faculty members who are dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and mentorship is essential for enhancing the quality of education. This is mainly due to competition, workload pressures, and limited professional development opportunities. Updating and innovating the curriculum to reflect emerging trends, technological advancements, and industry needs can be time-consuming and complex. Addressing these challenges requires strategic planning, collaborative leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

What do you see the greatest strengths of BCA department and how it can be enhanced? 

The greatest strengths of the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) department lie in its potential to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to excel in the dynamic field of information technology. However, its strengths are the practical learning opportunities it offers and the technical proficiency our students develop. Our faculty expertise is also unmatched as are the career opportunities our students are open to after graduation.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

It is important to develop a mindset of continuous learning to stay ahead of the curve. Develop soft skills along with technical skills. Set achievable but ambitious goals and take initiative towards them. Building and maintaining a strong professional network is highly advantageous in the long run. Gain practical experience whenever possible and be open to opportunities.
