Why a post-graduation degree in Mathematics is necessary for students?

We are at the age of artificial intelligence, so we all have to be skilled to overcome the upcoming challenges in multiple job sectors. In our course, M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics, one can develop knowledge of core mathematical topics as well as some specialized topics. This can help them build their careers in research. Additionally, it enables students to complete a postgraduate degree, which is a minimum criterion for the post of PGT in schools and Assistant professor in colleges.

Being a Faculty of the Applied Mathematics Department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

As a faculty member of the Mathematics Department, my roles and responsibilities towards students can be quite diverse and impactful. Firstly, I need to design and update the lesson plans to include both foundational theories and the latest developments in mathematics. We try to deliver lectures that not only cover the syllabus but also inspire curiosity and critical thinking about mathematical concepts. Our departmental faculties are always available to students for extra help, whether it’s during office hours or through other communication channels.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

Establishing healthy relationships with students and fellow faculty members is essential for a positive and productive academic environment. I encourage open and honest communication and want to be approachable, empathic and willing to listen to both students and colleagues. I always welcome everyone’s ideas and contributions because valuing diverse perspectives can foster mutual respect.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain the necessary skills?

Our department always encourages students to actively engage with the material. This includes participating in class discussions, solving problems, and collaborating with peers. We also organize workshops and seminars focused on problem-solving strategies. We invite guest speakers or faculty members to share their expertise in different specializations. These sessions can cover topics like mathematical modelling, optimization, and real-world applications.

What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your department or How does your department prepare students for higher education?

A few of the subjects in our two-year course curriculum are computer science. This helps the students gain enhanced knowledge of data structure and programming. The students will be ready for IT careers through this course. We also provide placement assistance for interested students. Most of our previous students tend to gravitate towards teaching jobs and they have joined different technical colleges. Students are motivated to take part in research through collaborative dissertation work as well.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

We provide CSIR NET tutorial classes and organize seminars on different trending topics of applied mathematical science. Here, students get to interact and network with experts and professionals in the field. We also introduce them to mathematical software like Mathematica, Matlab, etc, which are required for research purposes.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

Stay curious and committed to lifelong learning. The world is constantly evolving and keeping your skills sharp can help you adapt to changes. You have to build a strong network of contacts through your behaviour and expertise. Relationships can open doors to opportunities that might not be accessible otherwise. Set clear, achievable goals. Having a direction helps you focus your efforts and measure progress.
