Indian General Insurance Premium Expected to Touch 500 Billion By 2030: BIMTECH India Insurance Report 2023

Date: October 12, 2023
October 10th, 2023; Greater Noida: In a first, the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), one of India's leading B-schools, unveiled the India Insurance Report- Transforming Indian Insurance- Series II. One of the report's significant findings was that the general insurance premium is expected to surpass Rs. 3,91,216 crores by 2030 based on historical data of 20 years. However, the industry's premium volume may exceed Rs. 5,00,000 crores by 2030 as the ideal premium level, considering regulatory reforms intended to achieve full insurance coverage for every household by 2047 and an anticipated rise in market participants and intermediaries. This study, conducted by Prof. Steward Doss at NIA Pune and Prof. Abhijit K. Chattoraj, Dean (SW & SS); Professor & Chairperson of PGDM - (Insurance Business Management) at BIMTECH, is based on historical premium data of all important lines of GI business between 2001-2022.
This report focuses on Demographic Changes, Understanding Customer Behavior, Financial Literacy and Mindset Change, Leveraging AI and ML, Wellness Insurance and Insurtech Integration, Digital Transformation, Growth Projections, VR, AR, and Blockchain Adoption, IoT and Parametric Insurance.
According to Dr Abhijit K. Chattoraj, a BIMTECH India Insurance report editor, "India's aging population is expected to increase, with over 20% of the population aged 60 and above by 2040. The growth of middle-income and high-income households in 2030 will drive insurance demand. Increased use of AI and ML can help insurers understand changing risk dynamics and customer needs. Risk-Based Capital (RBC) implementation by 2024-25 can enable risk-based premium rates and product innovation. Increasing digital usage among customers will drive end-to-end digital experiences and technological applications. New online distribution models like B2C, B2B, and B2B2C will be key growth drivers."
BIMTECH India Insurance report suggests achieving the goal of "Insurance for All by 2047." The establishment of robust self-regulatory organisations for insurers, brokers, surveyors, and InsurTech is essential. These organisations can provide impetus to newer business lines such as Aviation, Oil and Energy, Liability, Trade Credit, and political risks, ensuring separate monitoring instead of grouping them as a generic "miscellaneous" category. Additionally, several key factors are influencing the industry and have significant potential to shape its future trajectory, such as changing profiles of insurance buyers driven by sustained awareness campaigns, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The evolving profile necessitates more customised insurance products to meet individualised needs. Capital infusion is crucial to expanding the insurance business and increasing insurance penetration. The industry requires a greater number of intermediaries and insurance players to sustain anticipated growth. Technology is becoming a critical enabler, enhancing underwriting and claims management coordination. Regulatory and governmental support has streamlined business processes, reduced regulatory compliance burdens and facilitated innovative product launches.
Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, and joint editor of BIMTECH India Insurance Report, spoke about expanding the general insurance industry. He said, "Initiatives like "Bima Trinity" proposed by the regulator can be instrumental in driving and sustaining insurance business growth. Mutual insurance companies can play a pivotal role in promoting micro-insurance across the country and engaging local communities. Customer-centric initiatives like Customer Information Sheets (CIS) and 100% cashless settlement for medical expenses are essential to build trust and ensure long-term growth. These measures and considerations collectively provide a comprehensive strategy to steer the general insurance industry toward a successful future."
BIMTECH's Insurance India report also features articles from prominent industry figures like G.N. Bajpai, ex-Chairman SEBI and LIC; Sakate Khaitan, Senior Partner at Khaitan Legal Associates; Tapan Singhel, Managing Director and CEO Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co. Ltd, Prof Bejon Kumar Misra, International Consumer Policy Expert, Bhargav Dasgupta former Managing Director & CEO of ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited; Dr David Mark Dror Retired Scholar and Practitioner concentrating on universal social protection; Arup Chatterjee, Principal Financial Sector Specialist with the Finance Sector Office at the Asian Development Bank, Amit Kalra, Managing Director and Head Swiss Re GBS Centres India; Voravate Chonlasin, Executive Director, Asian Institute of Technology( AIT Extention) & Mr Arun Agarwal - Author and former CEO.

The celebration underscores the institute's unwavering commitment to instilling the culture and values of social welfare in its students. The three-day celebration, commencing on September 30th and continuing through October 1st, featured performances by the National School of Drama Repertory group with drama “Maaee Ree Main Kaa Se Kahun”, directed by Shri Ajay Kumar, and the Asmita Theatre Group from New Delhi with drama “Andha Yug,” directed by Shri Arvind Gaur.
The Foundation Day function on October 2 began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by the welcoming of guests. During the event, the institution paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by playing his favorite bhajan, 'Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye'.
Shri. Anshu Gupta, founder of Goonj, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He said, “
Thank you very much to BIMTECH for inviting me to their 36th Foundation Day. I come from a family of engineers—a very determined family that ensured everyone studied well. There were not many financial resources back then. I often think that being able to speak in more than one language outside the country allows me to communicate with everyone. It is a huge investment for the generation, which never thought of buying a car but invested more in the education of all of us. From a determined family with limited means to witnessing life's complexities, I learned that challenges come in various forms. My journey through journalism and Indian mass communication unveiled hidden stories of dignity and resilience. Charity, while well-intentioned, should aim for sustainable empowerment, not dependency. We must cherish our education and uphold the dignity of every individual. Let us work together, regardless of our backgrounds, to build a nation where honesty and ambition drive progress. Subsidies are opportunities, not entitlements, and giving back enriches us all. In a world where education remains our most enduring subsidy, let's ensure it reaches everyone.”
Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, delivered a welcome speech in which he emphasized the remarkable development of the institute from a small basement in New Delhi to one of the top B-schools. He highlighted the institute's tireless efforts to raise awareness about ESG in both the corporate and academic spheres.
Also, he welcomed to host Mr. Anshu Gupta, a true disciple of Gandhi who left his corporate career to embark on a transformative journey. His organization, Goonj, exemplifies Gandhi's principles in addressing pressing global challenges, earning international recognition. It stands as a beacon of hope in the face of climate change, sustainability, and humanitarian issues.
He said, "Mahatma Gandhi's eleven vows, including truth, nonviolence, simplicity, and duty towards humanity, remain profoundly relevant, not just in India but across the globe. BIMTECH's choice to commence on October 2nd, Gandhi's birthday, reflects his enduring impact. Albert Einstein once remarked, 'Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.' Gandhi's influence on our world cannot be overstated.”
In keeping with its illustrious heritage of encouraging significant contributions to education, the BIMTECH administration also bestowed various honours, like the Basant Kumar Birla Distinguished Scholar Award, 2022; the Best Researcher and Teaching Excellence Award, 2022; and the felicitation of faculty and staff completing 10 years of service.
On this occasion, the Insurance India Report, and the Annual Activity Report were also released.
The insurance report has articles from many eminent names in the business, like Shri G.N. Bajpai, ex-Chairman SEBI and LIC; Shri Sakate Khaitan, Senior Partner, Khaitan Legal Associates; and Shri Tapan Singhel, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co. Ltd. It also suggests regulatory reforms in the insurance sector. It is noteworthy to note that BIMTECH offers a PGDM in Insurance Business Management. The festival was inaugurated by, Shri Bhupender Yadav, co-author of the book “The Rise of the BJP: The Making of the World's Largest Political Party”, and the Union Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. While delivering the keynote address on the importance of literature in shaping and influencing modern business practice, Chief Guest, Shri Bhupender Yadav said, “Books play a key role in developing business modules. It is a great initiative on a management institute’s part to have organized a business literature festival as it boosts education and learning. In today’s date, most bestselling books on personality development as well as books of different course curriculum stress on inner wisdom and personal journey. Essentially, it leads to the topic of mindfulness. Mindfulness is all about being aware of different components of life and in my opinion the best book on mindfulness is Yoga Sutra. The first Sutra “Atha Yoga Anushasanam”, talks about refining one’s attitude while adopting the practice of yoga. The second Sutra “Yoga Chitta Vritti Nirodah”, refers to everything moving through the space of the heart and says that distractions are of five types. The management of all these five stages of emotions is what yoga is about. We cannot manifest outer success unless we have inner peace. Management is not just about climbing the ladder of success, but it’s about navigating through relationships patiently. Hope that in coming times there will be more discussions on books that talk about Eastern life philosophies.”
The two-days festival brings together some of the brightest minds in the industry for a series of candid talks, panel discussions, book-launches, reviews and informative masterclasses. There are also exclusive author signing sessions and book stalls that have been set up by prominent publishing houses such as Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Kunzum Books, and Rupa Publications. The festival is graced by eminent personalities such as Mr. Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian-Tata Sons, author of #TataStories and TataLog, Mr. Kiran Karnik, Author of Decisive Decade, Ms. Christine Amour-Levar, Author of Wild Wisdom, Mr. Bharat Wakhlu, Founder, The Wakhlu Advisory TWA, Mr. Parmesh Shahani, Author of Queeristan; LGBTQ Inclusion in the Indian Workplace, Founder of Godrej India Culture Lab, LGBTQ Inclusion consultant, and author of Tata's Leadership Experiment, among others. The dignitaries are sharing insights and experiences on a range of topics, from innovation and entrepreneurship to corporate strategy and leadership.
Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director of BIMTECH, said, "Reading is an integral part of a student’s and academicians’ life. An opportunity for them to listen, discuss and absorb the ideas from the best of business literary minds through this festival is a huge learning experience. The initiative started during the pandemic in a virtual mode and this year in its third edition, we have hosted it in the campus, in order to offer a bigger platform for discussion and collaboration and bring invaluable insights and perspectives to the table. We are proud to have hosted this festival and are grateful to all who participated, making it an unforgettable experience."
This one-of-a-kind literature festival emphasizes on going beyond textbooks and case-studies in B-schools to learn through stories and experiences of others. The aim is to encourage the habit of reading business literature amongst students and professionals. Part of this year’s lineup featured authors PKD Nambiar, Ankit Jhamb and Prof. Bharat H. Desai unveiling their books You, Too, can be a brand, The Most Negative Book of Positivity and Envisioning Our Environmental Future respectively.
BIMTECH in collaboration with Ms. Radhika Marwah, Executive Editor of Penguin Random House conducted an informative Masterclass on ‘Write that book! A masterclass on writing and publishing’. Another intellectual takeaway was the Masterclass on ‘Happily Insured: Guide to Understanding Insurance and Leading a Stress-free Life’ with Mr. Kapil Mehta, who is an author and a Co-Founder at SecureNow Insurance Broker.
Mr. R. N. Bhaskar, author of "Gautam Adani: Reimagining Business in India and the World," and Mr. Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian at Tata Sons and author of "#TataStories" and "TataLog" bridged the gap between the business and academic worlds through their insightful industry-related presentations.
In the Fireside Chat, Mr. Kiran Karnik, author of "Decisive Decade," and Mr. Hardayal Singh, author of "The Moral Compass: Finding Balance and Purpose in an Imperfect World," delved into a thought-provoking discussion on "India: The Road Ahead" and offered valuable insights on India's potential role in an evolving global landscape.

Celebrating Glorious 35 Years of BIMTECH
Strengthening the BIRLA ETHOS of an inclusive, equitable and sustainable tomorrow

Date: October 04, 2022
GREATER NOIDA, India (October 2, 2022): The 35th Foundation of BIMTECH falls on October 2nd, which is also celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. The fact that BIMTECH’s Foundation Day falls on Gandhi Jayanti makes the day even more significant for the institute, and it signifies the institute's withering commitment to the values of social welfare.
The three-day celebration started on September 30th with a Drama Festival organized in collaboration with Asmita Theatre Group, New Delhi. On the first day, citizens of Greater Noida witnessed the performance of a hard-hitting street play "NASHA" on the social evils of alcoholism and addiction, which was performed for the community at Birla Vidya Kendra, Pari Chowk. In the evening, the conscience of the citizens of NCR was further awakened after watching a stage adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s story "Moteram Ka Satygrah", which mocks the system, particularly bureaucracy. On day two, the festival continued with the same zeal and enthusiasm during which a street play was performed near Yatharth Hospital, Greater Noida. "Mard" highlighted how males are conditioned to be tough and suppress their emotions, challenging the conventions of traditional masculinity. The play was successful in grabbing the attention of passers-by and was able to gather great appreciation from the audience.
On October 1st, the staging of the socio-emotional play "Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya Woh Jamyai Nai" left the audience spellbound with the theme and compelling performances of artists as well as the direction of Shri Arvind Gaur, Founder and Director of Asmita Theatre Group. The play was about the sufferings faced during the traumatic dislocation caused by partition, but highlighting the power of human generosity. The drama festival was successful in making the audience realise their roles in maintaining communal harmony and peaceful co-existence of all religions. Shri Asghar Wajahat, a famous playwright, and Shri Ramesh Chandra Gaur, Director of the National School of Drama, New Delhi, graced the drama festival. Ms. Saveree Sri Gaur, a senior artist, was awarded the Sarala Birla Award 2022 for her role in emancipatory theatre and movies. Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi also announced that performing artists will be eligible for a 50% scholarship to study business at BIMTECH.
The 35th Foundation Day was formally celebrated on October 2nd with the welcome of the Chief Guest, the ceremonial lamp lighting and furthering the true spirit of the Birla legacy and Gandhian ideology of building communities and social welfare.
Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, delivered the welcome speech, in which he emphasised the remarkable development of the institute from a little basement in New Delhi to one of the top business schools. The Director brought forward how the institute has been working tirelessly towards raising awareness about ESG in both the corporate and academic worlds. The Director also thanked Shri. G.N. Bajpai for gracing the occasion with his presence and thanked him for delivering an address about an issue that holds great significance in today’s world.
Director Chaturvedi said, "During the last two years of the pandemic, we have witnessed a lot of pain, deaths, and unfortunate moments. In those troubling times, we recalled Gandhi Ji, who taught us to be empathetic towards the suffering of others.
The Chief Guest, Shri. G.N. Bajpai, Ex-Chairman, SEBI, and LIC, enlightened students about the importance of ESG in today’s world. He encouraged upcoming managers and business leaders to have a holistic and sustainable approach to conducting business. It was put forward by him that the world has moved on from reporting where the only interest was the top line and bottom line to holistic reporting where "shareholder return to stakeholder return’’ should be considered. He also quoted "Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve Santu Niraamayaah" as the motto for modern corporations. He mentioned that Gandhian ideology also shares a similar approach to social development. It was mentioned that the corporation needs to work on the intersection of our traditional values and modern principles. He also highlighted the urgency of the issue with the following statement: "The current generation of Homo sapiens is living through a cycle of unprecedented health, wealth, and quality of life, yet a vast portion of the population is below the poverty line, living without basic sanitation and electricity."
The BIMTECH management also conferred numerous honours in keeping with its illustrious tradition of fostering valuable contributions in education. In memory of the founder, BIMTECH conferred the Basant Kumar Birla Distinguished Scholar Award, 2021 to eminent researchers from private universities for their contribution to business research: Dr. Sachin Mangla, O.P. Jindal Global University, Haryana; Dr. Shalini Talwar, SPJMIR, Mumbai; and Dr. Rajesh K Singh, MDI, Gurgaon; a prize amounting to six lakhs.
The "Best Teacher" and "Best Researcher" awards (2021-22) were given to deserving professors of the institute. Several faculty and staff members were also felicitated for their devoted service spanning more than a decade.

“BIMTECH does not believe in resting, it keeps climbing and reaching newer heights”. These words of Dr. Ajit Ranade spoken during the 35th Commencement Day speech of PGDM Batch of 2022-24 at BIMTECH, Gr Noida purely resonated with the aura of the campus as it welcomed its PGDM 2022-24 batch after a hiatus of two years of offline campus life. The campus witnessed vibrancy and youthfulness all around as the new bunch of excited students along with their parents embraced new beginnings. To introduce them to the virtues and ethos of Birla legacy, the day started with piety. The campus reverberated with chants during yajna followed by soulful renditions of Hanuman Chalisa by Pandit Sujeet Ojha. The institution celebrated its 34th Foundation Day on October 2, 2021. This momentous day witnessed the gracious presence of Prof. (Dr.) M V Rajeev Gowda, Chairman AICC Research Department.
The event started with Lamp Lighting by the dignitaries and by playing Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye” followed by garland and bouquets presentation to chief guest made by girls benefitted under the CSR project “Protsahan Chiraiya”. Then as the tradition goes everyone was welcomed with a speech by Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH. He explained the meaning of the bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye” is that “You are a good human being only when you realize the pain of others”. Bapu always taught us to be empathetic towards the suffering of others. Our patrons and founders of BIMTECH Sh. Basant Kumar Birla and Smt. Sarala Birla was very close to Gandhian thoughts and wisdom. Our founders had given us a motto of “Excellence with Values” which is also a part of our credo and we always try to adhere to it in our thoughts and life. It is our value quote and has key values of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The eminent chief guest of the event Prof. (Dr.) M V Rajeev Gowda, Ex-member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha (2014-20), a former professor at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and currently, serving as the Chairman of the Research Department of the Indian National Congress presented Foundation Day Address with a presentation on “Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in Today’s India” to understand Gandhian thoughts. He focused on two themes lessons for public life, public policy and, lessons for management students from the life of Gandhiji. He highlighted how Gandhiji acted as an inspiration for leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. When visiting India Martin Luther King Jr. said that “To others countries, I may go as a tourist but in India, I come as a pilgrim” he quoted that because India to him is Gandhiji.
