Could you brief us about your institute, department, and your role as a H.O.D.?
V. Parekh Technical Institute is a diploma engineering college and My department is General Department offers courses like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English which are the basic foundation courses for engineering. As it's a diploma engineering college most of the students take admitted to this college after class 10. So, they lack the knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, and Math at a higher secondary level. So, to build a strong foundation for them and to concrete their learning experience of engineering these courses are offered by the general dept.
What is unique about the General Dept. of AVPTI?
The institute itself carries a 75-year-old legacy. And the general department offers well-equipped laboratories, well-furnished classrooms, qualified faculties, doctorate level staff in all subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Math, English), and all types of instruments are present in the laboratory. The general department offers basic courses for all branches of engineering students, so all of them interact with the faculties of the general department. And students of different branches also have interactions with them. To overcome the language barrier of Gujarati medium students there's the facility for a Language lab, grammar learning, Audio-visual sessions in English, and communication and pronunciation classes.
How do you maintain teacher-student relationships?
Students are given different projects that can be laboratory work, secondary data-based projects, or outside data-based projects, they do surveys, collect information from Youtube, do self-study and for feedback and guidance they come to teachers. So, all these projects work, practical classes alongside theory classes, conducting quizzes- all these activities fulfill the knowledge gap of the students and also increase teacher-student interaction, hence building the teacher-student relationship.
What extracurricular activities this dept. is offering to students?
Visiting guest faculty come to the college, they deliver lectures to students on their subject expertise, Celebration of Science & mathematics day, quiz competitions for students, Essay writing competitions, Exhibitions, Industry visits, Science center visits, visits to other colleges and institutions all these activities are there for the students.
What are the challenges faced by the institute implementing this programme?
Most of the students come from Gujarati medium and here all the course curriculum of engineering and basic courses are offered in English. So, initially, that becomes a challenge for the students as well as the teachers teaching them.
How is your department coping with these challenges?
We provide the facility for Language lab, English Practicals, grammar learning, Audio-visual sessions in English, communication, and pronunciation classes.
What Message would you like to give to current youth and aspiring students?
Sometimes students don't take the studies of foundation courses seriously as they think their engineering courses are their main priority. So, when students go to field work they get the practical knowledge but to gain the benefit of practical knowledge and to compensate for the deficit of practical, theoretical knowledge of these basic courses will be of immense help.
