Dr.Parvez Faruki is the Head Of The Department at A. V. Parekh Technical Institute Rajkot, India. He holds an M.Tech and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology. In 2012, he was awarded a CFAIT $ 10,000 Commonwealth fellowship grant for further research at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He was a part of the research team on behalf of MNIT Jaipur for a joint DST-RFBR project with the South-Russian Educational and Research Center for IT-Security at Southern Federal University, Russia. Android Security, Vulnerability Assessment, and Malware detection techniques employing statistical analysis via machine learning models are some of his fundamental interests.

A. V. Parekh Technical Institute is a Government Diploma Engineering College under the Department of Technical Education, Karmayogi Bhavan Gandhinagar. The role of the Head of the Department is academic administration to manage the faculty and staff and interact with various stakeholders in computer engineering. The department has Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Lab Assistants, and Computer Operators. Many of the team hold Masters in Engineering, and a few are pursuing their Ph.D. studies. Dept. has an intake of 180 students per year. Currently, the computer engineering department in-houses 621+ students in the First, Second, and Final years respectively. 

What do you say about the competency and skills of the students studying in this institute?

The computer engineering pass-outs from our department are the most sought-after, whether it is undergraduate studies in engineering or placements. AVPTI Computer Engineering students are among the Gujarat Technological University Toppers. The department is ranked among the First Five in the Gujarat state-affiliated Gujarat Technological University Ahmedabad. The Computer Engineering Program has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation since 2021-22. The centralized admissions committee admits the admissions for professional diploma courses (ACPDC) based on their Class 10 merit.

What is unique about your institute?

The institute was established in 1948. This institution is a 75-year-old legacy. Our alumni of the '60s, '70s, and '80s batches are in prominent positions at Aakashwani, Doordarshan, ISRO, IPR, and PRL, flagship organizations of the government of India. The institute has maintained the tradition since its inception. And the computer Engineering Department is one of the top-ranked departments of AVPTI. Among 10 students who are university toppers, many of them have been CE AVPTI Rajkot. Faculties are capable, resourceful, skilled, and competent. Students are exposed to industry, practice schools, state, and national level events like Robocon, Software development events, cyber competitions, funded university projects, student start-ups, and innovation policy (SSIP) project challenges. The exposure helps the students develop their innovative projects, and they are endowed by various agencies. 

What are the teachers and faculty training programs offered by the institute?

Faculty members of Department of Technical Education, Govt. of Gujarat. The department gives ample opportunities for faculty members to train them with the latest tools and technologies. The technical education department has hosted an online training applications portal already available from technical education. Every year, the faculty has to select what training he/she would like to register for. The faculty reports at NITTTR institutions, extension centers, and institutes of national importance for short-term courses. The Department of Technical Education funds the training to upgrade staff skills.

What extracurricular activities are provided to students apart from regular activities?

Right from the first year, our students are exposed to internships. At the end of the second Semester, students go for a two-week internship program either at an industry or register for an online course at a portal such as Swayam. The students undergo a six-week Industry internship at the beginning of the fifth Semester. Students are exposed to city-level, state-level, and district-level competitions. As part of the G20 initiatives, students are exposed to many activities. The institute organizes sports week to give them mental support with sportsmanship.

What are the types of projects students are working on?

Projects can be supporting municipal corporations, sewage, traffic light control, helping NGOs, and saving food from wastage by collaborating with people who want to donate food. All are software-led, full-fledged, application-based projects.

What challenges does the department face in implementing all the program initiatives for students? 

Most students come from the local language medium (Gujarati); however, computer science courses are offered in English. Hence, the orientation classes are offered to help them with their English and to help them do more on their own to become independent.

What Message would you like to give to current youth and aspiring students?

 The Computer Engineering department of AVPTI, Rajkot, is a very optimistic place. The program has been accredited since 2021-22, enabling the engineers to be globally acceptable under the Washington Accord.
