Mr. Bhavin Changela is the Head of the Department of Biomedical department in A.V. Parekh Technical Institute. He holds a B.E. and an M.E. degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from Mumbai University. Moreover, he is a certified Chartered Engineer in Biomedical Engineering. He has work experience in industry and academia. Mr. Changela is a life member of BMESI, The IAENG Society of Bioinformatics, Imaging Engineering, HIV/AIDS, Electrical Engineering, IAENG, IEI, ISTE, PAM among others. Not only has he written several books, but he has also published papers in notable journals. He has taken part in organising and attending numerous workshops and conferences.

What is unique about the Biomedical Engineering Dept. of AVPTI?

Biomedical engineering bridges the gap between medical science and engineering. Doctors are aware of human anatomy and physiology, but the functioning of medical equipment and medical instruments is managed by biomedical engineers. AVPTI is the only institute offering this course in Rajkot. Additionally, girls’ students have zero tuition fees for this course. Developed countries are well acquainted with Biomedical Engineering, and they have implemented the system long back but India is also gradually meeting this demand.

What are the opportunities for students to work in this Biomedical Engineering field?

In hospitals, it is mandatory to have a biomedical department in case of an emergency of non-functioning of biomedical instruments. Biomedical engineers come in as aids. During the COVID pandemic, the importance and significance of biomedical engineers were seen. Different companies need biomedical engineers now as well. There are opportunities now and in the future but students aren't aware of them.

What are the teacher and faculty training programmes you go through?

The Directorate of Technical Education has a TNA portal that has teacher training programmes. Our faculty members use them to undergo training programmes for their technical upgrades.

What are the strengths of your biomedical engineering dept.?

Students become technically sound over their course period. The biomedical engineering course in AVPTI has got NBA accreditation. From a market perspective as well, the job market is not saturated for biomedical engineers, demand is more than supply.

How about the challenges of biomedical engineering department?

One of the biggest challenges is when students join us after their class 10th. They are lacking in core subjects, knowledge and cannot meet the demands of the course. We also find it difficult to regularly update our laboratory equipment. It also becomes difficult to frequently visit hospitals for lab work and practical fieldwork.

What message would you like to give to current youth?

As biomedical students, you are going to be helping the doctors. So, they must bring the value of human life and learn medical ethics. They must then learn to put these values into practise apart from learning technical knowledge.
